Default what's going on with this motor???

ok, my gf has a del sol s with a d15b. the problem is, i cant figure out which d15b it is. (vtec or non vtec). I have a d16z6 and i know where the vtec solenoid is. on her car, its gone--heres a pic

I was doing some research and i kept reading that the non vtec d15b was dual carburetor. hers is fuel injected. it also has the spark plugs in the back like the other d15b motors i've seen, so the head wasnt swapped. So maybe I was thinking someone just pulled the vtec off and put a block plate where the solenoid should have been, but my d16z6 has quite a bit more horsepower than the d15b so I believe that is out of the question. Also, I am not sure if this matters, but her car has around 232000 miles on it.

Whats going on???

thanks

You sure its not the stock D15B7 thats supposed to be in there? Its either that or a JDM D15B dual carbed engine with a D15B7 intake and exhaust manifold with a block off plate on the back of the head where the mechanical fuel pump should be.

you can check the casting numbers on the head, they should say PJ-7 if they are d16y8 or 7, and d16z6 have different numbers, also you'd see the blockoff plate a mile away.

i would bet lots of money that it's the d15b7 that's supposed to be in there. there's no way that's a jdm d15b, that head is definitely a non-vtec head. the jdm d15b is either as stated by 94eg8 or looks almost identical physically to the d16z6 here's a reference picture.

look down on her block where the engine code is stamped and rub it down with some cleaner or degreaser to make sure you're not missing the 7 on the end of the d15.

You can tell its a nonvtec due to the fact that the plug wires are on the intake side

Again, its not a block off plate for the vtec solenoid. Its a block off plate for the mechanical fuel pump the engine originally came with. These things were dual carbed originally. Intake and exhaust manifold has been swapped to those from a D15B7.

Here's a write-up on the nonvtec JDM D15B engine (formerly dual carbed, as 94EG8 notes; typically converted to MPFI for re-sale in the U.S. etc.):

http://honda.lioness.googlepages.com...15benginenotes

Beware that the crankshaft pulley's marks are etched for 18 degrees BTDC, which is the spec for dual-carb'd usage. You want to set timing at 16 degrees BTDC for MPFI (the spec for the D15B7 among others).

a common mistake is that there is only one D15B, there are in fact several.

--- I've personally seen these ---
one is the commonly thought of 130hp (similer to the Z6)
one is a version of the D15Z1 (VX)
one is a dual VTEC solenoid model
one is a non-VTEC model
one is carb'd non-VTEC model

there is likely more, since like I mentioned these are only the ones I've seen personally.

the picture the OP posted could be one of the last two, since they looked almost identical except for the fuel pump and IM.
casting dates on the head should help a lot...
