yeah, my friend did it on his diesel truck while it was running, i was just wondering if the small metal shavings that did fall into the exhaust if theyed flow threw the turbo

I myself have 4 egt probes.... one for each cylinder.
An EGT probe break? I haven't thought twice about putting it in front of my GT30. I've never heard of an EGT breaking off.
I've drilled DSM mani's several times pre-turbo. Used grease on the bit and had the motor running...no problems ever.

It depends on your EGT. The above fellas state 1.5-2" away from the manifold flange. I have an AIM sports and it requires 6" distance from the flange, on cyl #1. What EGT do you have? Whatever it is, follow those directions.
i think running = running so that the tiny shavings of metal can be expelled through the turbo gradually instead of a pile of them building up then getting slung all around when the motor gets started up.
I would think that since it is pre turbo, there is a bit of back pressure in the pipes...so when you punch through it pushes gases and metal shavings out of the hole instead of allowing them to fall in........I still dont get it though, we are talking about a honda right? It takes less than half an hour to pull the manifold off, and not risk ANY metal going through the turbo

Of course personal preference is to remove the manifold. I certainly removed mine. Fact is though, it's very common practice in the DSM world. A lot of those guys run stock manifolds, yet do various mods (MAF hack, boost controller, afc, etc) and adding an EGT is something they'd like to do, but don't want to deal with galled bolts.
Therefore, yes, with the motor running, drill the port with some grease on the drill bit. Between the grease grabbing shavings and exhaust pushing them out it's pretty safe. Would I do it on DSM's with 14b's..yes, and I have...would I do it with my GT3082r downwind..hell no. The risk is low, but when CHRA's are 1000 bucks low risk isn't low enough.
