question on EGT
hi,
I have a Autometer EGT model 3344 and i would like to know where to install it.
I tried to install it in the manifold, and the temperature was too hi and some people told me to install it in the downpipe, so i install it in the downpipe but now it seem to be to low.
Does the probe was design to be install in manifold?
So i would like to know where to install it and if it's install after the turbo, where exactly do i need to put it?
Thanks a lot

id say 1-2 inches from head, tapped into ur manifold, on cylinder number 3, this would be looking into the engine bay 2nd from left, i believe its the hottest running cylinder due to the EGR, exhaust gas recirculation port located arounf that spot

Re: question on EGT (civic1990si)
I havn't decided where to put my EGT yet either. Manifold or downpipe adapter.
I think I'm going go to with the 3rd cly on the manifold. It will give more accurate reading and can save you from staying WOT if EGT gets too hot.
I hear a lot of TALK about not to put it in the manifold cuz it will break off and mess up the turbo. But I've never heard any confirmed cases of this happening.

I have always had my egt probe in my manifold. I'm just not willing to take the chance and have it break off and kill my turbo while being in the manifold. When you do the egt guage if that is all you have, you should tune it on a dyno anyway. That way you can compare the egt reading to your a/f reading.

Re: question on EGT (autoEXturbo)
best place to put it IMO is #3 runner 1.5" form the head
# 3 runner is the hottest, therefore, it would give out first hand worst case scenario. If you're within normal range under 800 celcius on # 3 runner, you should be fine elsewhere

yes and no, the #3 runner is qoute the correct place. But you can put it in the dp as long as you have it put on a dyno to compare where the egt sits at what a/f reading.

Re: question on EGT (civic1990si)
I have mine in the manny (runner 3), as I was told this was the proper place, but it seems a little odd since you only get a reading from one cylinder and thus you must assume that if something is going to go wrong it will be with all of them ie. fuel pump/pressure bad or ignition timing off...

Re: question on EGT (autoEXturbo)
I understand runner #3 is the best place, But how are you supposed to tap it on a tight bending tubular mani. If I still had my Drag or a Rev hard mani it would be no problem. I was told to go in the down tube about 2-3 inches from the flange at the turbo. Does this sound right?

Re: question on EGT (Flamenco-T)
Call me a dumb ***, but if I could not tap it from the top, then what makes you think I can tap it from the bottom? The only room I have to tap into would be the collector or the down tube.

let me see the pic of your manifold, chances are if you have a tubular manifold and you can not tap it from the top, it usually means, the runner comes up as soon as it come out of the head, so that's why I was suggesting to tap it on the bottom. Runners can only have 1 tight and 1 loose bend, if you can not do it on the tight bend, then do it on the loose bend.

Re: question on EGT (civic1990si)
Quote from Endyne's TOO:
All EGT probes, regardless of application should be installed at a location which would be 1/2 the primary tube diameter from the head surface. So if the ID of your primary tubes is 1.5", the hole or bung should be located .75" from the head side of the flange. You may place it at any angle to allow access to header bolts, etc.
This is a position that's considered a "standard" for location in the automotive world, and allows people to compare apples with apples.
