Default R12 --> R1341 A/C smells

1992 honda accord
it had R12, did a motor swap, pulled the A/C lines, now the weather is too hot, so since the lines are empty, i put in some R134a. A/C now works "okay," but there is a small, faint smell that isnt so pleasant. I was thinking that it was because the leftover gases from the R12 is mixing with the R134a. kind of getting a headache from the smell.

the retro kit had 3 bottles, i used 2, came with gauge and new LOW & HIGH fittings.
i know this is the cheap way to go about it, but i couldnt stand the 100 degree temps.

any ideas?

check to see if you have a cabin filter and see if it is cleaned or molded do to lines being exposed to air... also you can go to advance aut parts and there is a spray like $5 that you spray into your vents and it cleans and purifies the air coming out worth a shot lol of could be the orfice tube is drity in your accumlater or old mold in the accumlater do again to line being off and exposing to air and dampness....

R134a smells kind of like nasty dust or something. Are you sure you're smelling refrigerant? If so, the evaporator under the dash probably has a leak in it, which is no bueno. If you're not sure that it smells like refrigerant, pull the blower motor out and clean the filter in there.

^^^This guy's write up is clutch for getting your a/c super cold. My nipples get hard every time I get in my car.

Ditto the above^^^.

If your smelling refrigerant you have a leak in the evaporator, or if so equipped, leaking seals, ["O" rings] at either side of expansion valve.

Also, if you can smell it, it is a big leak and it will not last long.

You will need to recover any refrigerant left in the system and remove the evaporator, [and expansion valve if so equipped]to inspect it.

When refrigerant leaks out of the system so does oil, the refrigerant evaporates but the the oil will stay behind as a stain around the leak, when oil leaks onto the outside of the evaporator it tends to pick up dust and anything else carried in the air passing through it, [bacteria and mold spores] dust, bacteria, mold spores and other "stuff", add some water, [condensation from evaporator working] and you end up with one skanky oder.

But then it could just as likely be mice. 94
