sheered flywheel bolts (H22A) damaged crank
first let me say, i realize this is not a civic forum, but my car has a motor that you guys would know allot more about
hey guys, just signed up.. and i got my first honda yesterday.. and i need some advice
i went and picked up a '94 vx hatch, with an h22a. seemed to run good, but there was a slight vibration and roaring noise coming from the engine.. owner said it was the alternator bearings going out.. so that explained the noise, and the car has solid mounts, so i thought maby the vibration was normal..
i did not think much of it.. i got a few miles up the road, and eased on it in 5th gear to go around a car, and all of the sudden, it quit pulling and started making all kinds of noise, so i shut it off.
while i was waiting on help, i pulled the inspection plug that's by the bell housing, and put it in gear and rocked the car back and fourth, i could clearly see the flywheel moving, but the accesorys and crank pulley were not turning. i got the car back to my house, and pulled the dust shield, and sure enough the flywheel is loose
so it's going to be friday before i can start working on it.. i'm hoping i can just get the old bolts out, install new bolts, torque and loctite them, and call it a day.. but i'm kinda scared the crank hub might be damaged... has any one ever had this happen?
also, sometimes the flywheel will catch the crank and turn the whole motor.. i'm guessing it's grabbing on what's left of a bolt, or the dowel pin..

im just sanding the 2 surfaces and bolting it back together with permanent loctite, since you can still get it off if you heat the bolts later. I test fit it already, bolted it down, the 2 surfaces still seem flat enough to bolt together flat...
h22s are known for having the flywheel bolts start to back out , i have had this happen to me 3 times i solved the problem by getting arp flywheel bolts and loctite
autoluder, thanks.. good thread.
acid cracker, and 92.. the problem has been diagnosed.. i've allready determined that the flywheel disconnected from the crankshaft.. thanks anyway though

Pics or it didn't happen... :D
This is the first I've heard of this happening but who knows what the previous owner torqued the bolts to. The engine itself is never going to produce enough torque to shear the bolts off. My vote's for incompetent installation.

You torque in star formation 3 times.
Torque once to 27 lbs,
Torque again to 57 lbs
Torque a third time to 78lbs
Numbers might be off a little in the torque guide, but its good enough. Mostly all the bolts from the engine are required in the helms to be replaced once they are removed. If you are using new Honda bolts, you could get away without Locktite. But at 5 bucks for a little bottle, WTF.
