the month # on the sticker indicates the month in which it needs to be reinspected, and the year should be on the sticker as well, so 2 years usually for older cars, so the # should be 6 and the year should be 2011, not sure why you have a different month but as long as its a 2 year sticker you should be good.

Check when your license plate is suppose to be renewed. If it's 9-09 than nj may be switching to a no inspection sticker policy.
I'll tell you how it is in NC which may help. We switched to "no inspection stickers" about 6 months ago, its now done through your license plate. Say ur plate is due 7-09 but your inspection wasnt due untill 10-2009. So u go get ur plate which will come with a registration and will have 2 stickers that read 7-10 that you will stick on your license plate. Your registration will also say INSPECTION DUE: 7-10 because its now correlated with your license plate. Then say u go get it inspected cause you really didnt read the registration. It passes (remember we dont get stickers) and you get a sheet that will read next INSPECTION DUE 7-11, so there you have it.
Or NC state inspector said dont say anything to the customers unless they say something about it.

Don't worry about it. The only thing that matters is the date on the sticker, and that doesn't necessarily coincide with anything else (according to the NJ DMV website). If the sticker says September 2011, that's when you have to get it inspected again, by the end of that month.
And don't bump a topic more than once.

This happened to me with my car. In NJ when you go though inspection, you do not get 2 years from the month you go, you get 2 years from the last time it successfully past inspection. So in my case I went through inspection with a sticker that expired in 6/09 and I got a sticker for 12/10. I get a year and a half of inspection.
