damn, there have been a lot of posts about this lately.
Your chassis code is the third, fourth, and fifth letters of your VIN. So if it starts with 2HGEJ6, then you have an EJ6.

For the US 1996 - 2000 Civics:
CX hatch (D16Y7) = EJ6
DX coupe (D16Y7) = EJ6
DX hatch (D16Y7) = EJ6
EX coupe (D16Y8) = EJ8
EX sedan (D16Y8) = EJ8
GX sedan (D16B5) = EN1
HX coupe (D16Y5) = EJ7
LX sedan (D16Y7) = EJ6
Si coupe (B16A2) = EM1
VP sedan (D16Y7) = EJ6 (also called an SE or DX-V)
Plenty more info here (and in other posts too):

In short:
1HG = US built coupe or sedan
2HG = Canada built hatch or sedan
JH4 = Japan built sedan
EJ6 = CX hatch, DX coupe/hatch/sedan, LX sedan, VP sedan
EJ7 = HX coupe
EJ8 = EX coupe/sedan
EM1 = Si coupe
EN1 = GX sedan (built and sold in US only)
So 1HGEJ6 is a DX coupe or a DX/LX/VP sedan.
Here in the US the chassis code matches the engine for all 1996-2000 Civics. Overseas a car might not use the same engine though. For example, our EJ7 uses a D16Y5 (HX coupe with a 1.6L SOHC VTEC-E engine). In Japan the EJ7 uses a D16A (STD coupe with a 1.6L SOHC which I think might have VTEC, but I'd have to look it up again).
