my friends 1997 gsr just died on him. I took the valve cover off and the exhaust cam looks to have been frozen and the TB obviously jumped because of it. Is this worth fixing or just sell the car as-is to someone. Its a clean shell, white all stock. Had a oil leak on the engine from what i was told, think that is why the cam seized due to oil starvation. has 130k on it.

fix it DUDE! im picking up a white 98 GSR with 135k for 3k. the ISB need to be replaced.

 

worth fixing...check to make sure theres no damages tot he block, get another head and put it back together!

 

The camshaft froze? I have never seen this happen.. I would think that if the cam was to sieze up, it's going to break the timing belt, or at least strip the teeth off.

Try manually turning the motor over from the crank pulley (19mm socket) and turn counter clockwise to see if the rotating assembly is still good.

If you decide on parting out or selling, sell me the cam caps.

 

yea the cam you can see created a lot of heat twoards the gear, it even melted the plastic timing cover on the inside. the belt didnt snap, it just jumped over the gears.

What is a good price to offer my friend for this car? he is not sure he wants to spend the $ to fix. I dont want to low ball him.

 

2000 if the rest is complete. you can buy another lower mile jdm gsr engine for $1500, drop it, sell the old motor for a few hundred and have a 3000ish dollar gsr

 

is a 95 head the same as a 97? or is there some differences?
