Default very hard time timing this motor with skunk2 cam gears

ok, i will start off by saying i have timed my own personal car, and other friends cars many times, always using the same method and never once had a problem with it........UNTIL NOW!!!!!

i picked up these skunk 2 cam gears, one was advanced by 2 degrees, so i set it back to tdc (0 degrees) so they were both the same. so i proceed to install these on my cams and then i get ready to time it, useing the pins through the cam rails to hold the cams at tdc, well no matter what i do it ends up being off by like half a tooth everytime, i will try to get some pictures of how far it is off to show that its not even a full tooth. but i was kinda wondering if it had something to do with the cam gears?

the essential parts involved in the problem are a: gsr belt, gsr crank gear, gsr block, b16a head, skunk 2 cam gears, type r cams, b16a timing belt cover, gsr oil pump and i think thats about it. so i believe something is up with the cam gears or maybe these combination of parts are not compatible, any advice would be nice though. thanks

WITH CAMS ON TDC!

WITH CRANK ON TDC!

ive had a similar problem with some old AEMs on a frineds car, we came to the conclusion that they had to have been manufactured improperly

yeah they have skunk 2 laser etched in them (white writeing) its kinda hidden under the bolt, and the light also makes it hard to see.

mrbsponge, did you end up using the cam gears?

My setup is VERY close to yours and I had no problems. What crank pully are you using? You said GSR crank gear I am assuming you mean the timing belt drive gear? Try putting something in cylinder #1 to find TDC incase there is a mixmatch of parts. Follow the Helms tensioning sequence. Good luck

What direction are you turning the motor to find TDC? CW or CCW? You can also remove the distributer cap to double check TDC.

I had the same problem with stock cam gears. Are you sure this problem didnt exist with the old cam gears? I determined my problem was because my deck was milled too much.

sometimes if the block or head has been milled it will throw off the timing a little

the head has been milled, but just a very small amount, like very very very small amount, and i dont know if this problem existed with the stock cam gears cause this motor has not even been finished yet.

if it is the milling then how do i resolve the problem?

the dizzy isnt even on the motor, so it cant tell me where tdc is, and yes its a gsr drive gear and a b16a2 crank pulley, and i believe we are going ccw to reach tdc.

If it's the milling..then get a thicker headgasket. From the pictures....it looked like you turn crank pulley CW..instead of CCW?

ive always turned my motors CW to get TDC, and have always stuck a long screwdriver in the plug hole just to make sure.

when i was trying to get everything lined up with those AEMs, i had to actually degree the cam gear a tad, becuase at 0 i was always like a half a tooth off, i must have done it 20 times, and i am very good at setting timing.

also make sure once you get everything together that you roate the motor CCW about 3 teeth to tighten the belt.

I was just going to say when I built my motor that is how it was. The cams were off due to the head being milled. Those gears look fine to me.

I had lost two thousandths, and my gears looked like yours. My car runs fine and has for the past 6k miles.

If the head has been milled and the belt won't line up (I have the EXACT same problem right now), advance both cam gears the same amount until it is correct.

Advance 1deg(both cams) for every .012" of material removed

I always turn the motor ccw (looking at the crank pulley) because this is the way the motor rotates when it is running.
