Default Flywheel performance?

Well i have a b16a1 in my 88 HF rex and was wondering if me and my friend are overrating the flywheel, i have a 7.5 lb cm fly. We saw some video of a stock japan itr and it goes through the gears faster then myn, he also had a lighter fly, also i have just a filter over my throttle body, need to get a cai, is a flywheel really noticeable, or did the shop raped me cash and just left the stock fly and decided to steel my CM?? I mean the performance is right i beat a SH lude and gsr and some b16 91 hatch, but i dont think it revvs that fast for a 7.5 lb fly, maybe its just my imagination or i epected too much

(*btw this isnt hybrider93 but his friend)

I have the Spoon one already put in. Yeah, u should notice a significant diff. I hit vtec damn fast now...

As for the ITR vs ur 7.5 lb flywheel B16A ... there's not enough info to make judgement with. What if he shift gears at an earlier rpm, tranny modifications, etc

But yeah even with the Spoon 4.2 kg (about 10lbs) there was a huge diff. With 7.5, u should feel a really big diff. U do know that u sacrifice tq with the flywheel right

I am running an AASCO Motorsports Aluminum flywheel in my 88 B16 CRX. Yes, I do feel a difference. I've swapped many B16's into CRX's and hatches and when you compare the quickness of revs between the customers cars, its noticeable.

When I perform clutch installs, and the customer decides to go with a lightened flywheel, they are very pleased at the results. I don't charge anymore labor to the customer if they decide to go with a lightened flywheel during the clutch installation.

I know after owning a vehicle with one installed, I would never build another race car without one. The throttle response is great!!

Oh, and while we are on the subject of flywheels, here is some info I researched myself. ( Basically, I gathered all these flywheels up and weighed them on a digital scale at UPS )

Stock B16 or B18 flywheel (1st gen, and 2nd gen) = 17 lbs

2001 Type R flywheel = 15 lbs

AASCO Motorsports Aluminum Flywheel with Steel Friction surface = 8 lbs

All these include the weight of the PILOT Bearing also.

The AASCO weighed 7.95lbs without the Pilot Bearing to be exact.

I have the exact weight for the flywheels somewhere, but these are pretty close.

I was surprised to see the stock Type R flywheel to be only 2 lbs lighter, but I guess shaving off rotating weight is better than nothing.

Has anyone else weighed these themselves and got different results? I figured the digital scales at UPS would be more accurate than a bathroom scale

well........you see i have nothing to compare with, because when i got my b16a motor i bought the clutch and fly at the same as the install and had them put it on...so i have nothing to compare to...i mean i dont know how a stock b16a revvs like since i had everything installed at once. My friend told me that u can tell if u have a lighter fly by revving in nuetral and see if the rpm falls back quick and it does considerably drop faster than my friends b18c1 hatch with stock fly....maybe when i get a cai ill feel it even more. I just hope i dont find out down the road that i have my stock fly and got screwed at the shop.

If you have doubts about the shop putting on the Clutch Masters flywheel, take off the inspection plate and look, it's not hard to see.

well, what transmission do you have? a type R has a final drive much higher than most b16a trannies. although my J1 is close, so is the S1. but if you have a YS1, or Y1, then of course he'll go through the gears much quicker... plus, it's a type R.. his motor has more power so it will move faster also... come on now, i won't flame you but you deserve it...

not from the dyno charts I've seen, it puts more of both torque and horsepower to the wheels.

Now if you just install a "lightweight flywheel" and don't upgrade the clutch, you can out power the holding capacity of the clutch.

If you use a light flywheel you will lose a LITTLE gas milage
Due to the fact that there is less momentum in the drive line

Balancing and blueprinting the motor will also give you better throtle response
not to mention more power, and a higher rev
