Default HP and other differences between SI and DX?

Hey guys sorry for the newb question.

I'm looking into getting an EG hatch (with an original motor...no swaps) and see a few DX's and SI's and they are priced pretty close. The SI's are priced slightly higher....I know the SI has a better engine but how much more hp is it putting out? Also, does the SI have a different tranny? If the SI's are that much better I would rather spend a few extra bucks to get one.

Thanks for the help.

Civic Si 1992-1995
Civic Si/EX (USDM),EX-V (CDM)
Del Sol Si
125 hp @6600rpm / 106 lbs/ft @5200rpm
1590 cc
9.2:1
75mm x 90mm
SOHC
VTEC

Civic Dx 1992-1995
Civic DX/LX
Civic CX (CDM)
102hp @5900rpm / 98 lbs/ft @5000rpm
1493 cc
9.2:1
75mm x 84.5mm
SOHC
Non-VTEC

Si = shorter gear ratio, 1.6l engine (instead of the 1.5l for the Dx), Vtec, and more option on the car like sunroof and stuff...

Si hatchback Vtec 1.6
Horsepower: 125 hp
Max Horsepower: 6600 rpm
Torque: 106 ft-lbs
Max Torque: 5200 rpm

Dx hatchback Non-Vtec 1.5
Horsepower: 102 hp
Max Horsepower: 5900 rpm
Torque: 98 ft-lbs
Max Torque: 5000 rpm

i would pay the extra buck for the si if your not planing to swap
also the si have a closer gear ratios

Other differences are that the Si has more options.

You get a/c, power steering, power mirrors, sunroof, cruise control (99% sure), dash clock (99% sure), and most importantly, rear disc brakes.

DX is the base model so it has manual mirrors, no sunroof, no cruise control, and rear drum brakes.

Power steering and a/c are dealer options and many DX's have them. Any given DX you come across may or may not have A/C and/or power steering. Gotta look under the hood for the components. Behind the driver side headlight is where the power steering fluid reservoir will be; it will have a red cap. Directly to the right of the radiator is where the A/C condenser and fan will be. Looking for either of these parts will tell you whether it has those options or not.

I'm not sure but I don't think the DX had rear speakers either, whereas the Si does.

Oh, and I think the Si has a factory front lip like the Civic EX does.

My Si has ABS which was optional in '94, I know the other hatchbacks didn't have that option. The ABS option also came with larger 10.2" front brake rotors. Although it DOES NOT have power windows and locks, only the EX came with that.

The only other hatches that came with PS other than the SI is the DX with an automatic transmission.

To be honest if you want a daily driver with more options, just get an Si. It is heavier though, so if you plan on building a project car to go as fast as possible (within your budget of course) you may want to look at the CX, DX, or even the VX hatch. Good luck in your search..these cars are beccoming harder and harder to find in good condition!

A/C wasn't standard on Sis. Or any hatchback for that matter. According to my '94 civic sedan brochure it was standard on '94 EX sedans, but thats the only thing I can confirm.

'94 - '95 Si hatchbacks were supposed to have the rear speakers as standard equiment. I can confirm that they were optional for '92 and supposedly '93 as well (my own '93 Si has rear speakers, but i'm at least the 3rd owner and I suspect they were a dealer installed option just like they were for all other '92 - '95 hatchbacks (I have seen 1 CX that had them installed as a dealer installed option)

It doesn't. Oddly the VX hatchback does, presumably to make it more aerodynamic for even greater fuel ecomomy.

alright, so it looks like what 94EG8 said is right about 94-95 standard and 92-93 optional

the word "better" is subjective.
