Usdm b16a2 vs jdm b16a
Hello everybody! I wanted to ask one question that has been on my mind some quite time. I need the facts out. I'be heard some say that usdm b16a2 are way better than b16a is that true? please help!!! I am about to buy one either b16a2 or b16a and swap in my ek 4 door. Your help will be greatly appericate!!!
usdm engines are lower compression meaning less horse power, jdm engine has 10 horse over the usdm...i have the jdm b16a in my 4door ek and it pulls hard. although if you buy a usdm engine from a local junkyark you can get a clean one and get documented miles so you know what your buying you kinda take a bit of a risk in buying a jdm engine online sometimes because they may say it has around 50k on it but most times there makeing it up. also if you go with the jdm b16a you will have to convert it to an obd2 wich isnt hard but makes the swap a little more difficult. either way there both good engines and its gonna be alot better than the single cam so you cant go wrong.
Yeah, only difference really is the compression like 08zx14 said. 10 hp difference. I would consider the piece of mind that having documented mileage is worth valuable enough to make that difference up. Go for one you know what you are getting with.
B16a Power: 158 hp (118 kW) @ 7600 rpm & 111 ft·lbf (150 N·m) @ 7000 rpm
Compression: 10.4:1
B16a2 Power: 160 hp (118 kW) @ 7600 rpm & 111 ft·lbf (151 N·m) @ 7000 rpm
Compression: 10.2:1
Compression: 10.4:1
B16a2 Power: 160 hp (118 kW) @ 7600 rpm & 111 ft·lbf (151 N·m) @ 7000 rpm
Compression: 10.2:1

if it's an obd-1 b16a or newer, it will have 170hp compared to the US 160hp. Now... that is all considering a JDM ecu and higher octane fuel.
So really? I'd say that a healthy B16a2, and chipped p28 b16a (sirII) running on american fuel, would put about the same HP out.
The JDM SiRII supposedly have a slight bump in comression, and a bit more aggressive cam profile, along with a bit better tune on the base map. BUT... in Japan, they can get AT LEAST 94 octane at the pump. So.... I'd say go with whatever is in your budget. As far as which pulls harder? depends on the chasis, and tranny really.
a first gen b16a with cable tranny in an EF is gonna feel like it pulls harder than a 2000 civic si. As far as I know, the hydraulic b16 trannies are the same across the board (except the CTR of course) and the cable b16 trannies are geared a bit shorter with less top speed. (think 5k rpms at 75 mph in 5th)

Also when you convert the japanese octane, they're only runing 95. Also the CTR tranny is identical to the y21 tranny (in terms of gear ratio's), only its the s4c and is designed to deliver power above 8500rpm.
It doesn't matter if he uses a "CHIPPED" P05/P06/P08/P28/or P30 unless he's trying to get it reffed and lives in Cali. Chipped ECUs/ECMs have custom ignition and timing maps (along with vtec/redline/fuel cuttoff/injector test circuit/open loop/etc). A chipped P06 can be identically programmed to a P30 ecu.
Just a heads up for the OP. Also, makesure along with chipping the ecu is in fact a VTEC ecu or has been chipped for such.
