i have a built d16y8 that i am going to turbo in the next few weeks. i have a new oem honda oil pump. ive heard alot about the y8 pumps being weak. i just wondered how much hp can they feed, and how safe is the shimming and porting. any help i sgreatly appreciated. thanks

 

how much boost are you planning on running?

I would just use the pump and feeds from a z6 and i think you would be fine into the 300's whp

 

i dont know if its about the HP level..i think its about the rpm..when you get higher up in rpms i dont think they provide the proper pressure needed..i rev my y8 to 8300 but im not sure if i have a y8 pump or a z6 pump on mine..cant remember..

 

this is an interesting question. I'm trying to figure out in my mind how HP could be related to the output capacity of an oil pump. It could just be me, but my mind just can't seem to make the connection.

I can only see a relationship between RPM and oil pump output.

 

yea i feel you bro..hp shoud not have any affect on it..but rpm is a completely different thing..as ur rpm goes up ur oil pressure goes up and i think it just doesnt provide enough pressure at that rpm..maybe not enough flow

 

well, the pressure should remain constant regardless of RPM. I use an oil pressure gauge. It stays at 50 psi when the engine is under load at any RPM, and about 25 when not under a load.

The only issue (i think) is that there may be a hardware component issue at higher RPM (bad bearings, busted gears, etc.) that might be common for a particular pump as compared to another. But as far as providing enough oil flow, I think that is irrelevant since it is connected to the crankshaft.
