Default There is a ghost in my tach needle! NO!

I was driving the CRX the other day, and the tach needle would never stay steady. It would jump either 1000 rpms up or down from where it is supposed to be.
what the hell could be causing this...? everything, as far as i know, is stock. different exhaust, but that is it.
1988 crx si.

would the dizzy cause white steam/smoke to come out of the exhaust possibly?
like, after the car is turned off.
I am thinking of overhauling the engine... i just want to make sure it isnt some sort of smaller issue.

Change the dizzy with a known good one, that'll be the largest first thing to take care of.

check your grounds. If its not that its more than likely your ignitor going out. You shouldnt have to replace the whole distributor. You can get an ignitor for about $60 at autozone
