Default Timing belt "play"

Just changed my timing belt over the weekend. Car starts up fine but I havent moved it off the jackstands yet to take it for a drive. The new timing belt has a little bit of play to it especially on the exhaust side, intake side is minimal. Is this normal? whats should I check or how should I adjust this?

B18B motor

Thanks

maybe its out of time.
just a rule of thumb.
everytime you do the timing belt, make sure all the slack is out of the front/exhaust side.
you can take the intake side tension out with the stock tensioner.
loosen up the tensioner.
turn ur crank a little behind.
then slide the belt on with all the slack out of the exhaust side.
it should pull the crank right in line.
good luck.

there will always be play in the belt on the exhaust side. there will be a little deflection on the intake side of the timing belt if adjusted right. To get the propper tention on the belt. all you need to do is make sure everything timing mark wise lines up losen the tensioner bolt I like to mark the top tooth on the cam gear turn the crank pully counter clockwise count 3 teeth on the cam gear pully and tighten the belt tensioner bolt to spec that is all that is needed. At least that is all that is needed to do for the d series. I just reread your post saw that you have a b series it might be slightly different just check your shop manual. here is a good link on changing the timing belt page 2 even talks about the deflection in the belt and it is 3 teeth counter clockwise the same as the d sieres
