Default The weak d16y8

I'm pretty upset at the d16y8 engine...
Drove down the freeway today and some eg was coming up quick(heard his fart can)
I decided to run it with him on the freeway, didn't know what was in it.
He coulda smoked me by a mile if he wanted to.
To get to the point... Why do d16y8 engine vtecs feel so freaken weak?? is it because of the SOHC?? or what is it??

yup, vtec works better with 2 cams cause you can get more rpms out of the motor.... and it's all about the rpms

he was likley in his rpm range and you were not, kinda hard to run him down when he is at 6k and your at 4, he likely had a b series too.

I drive an automatic, so i already had my pedal all the way down to the ground, going at like 90-100. He came next to me revved and took off. I felt so embarassed. haha

streetracing ftl maybe the other car didn't have a d series, if he smoked you that bad sounds like he has a turbo or also had a motor swap done, heck maybe even both.

You drive an auto, that's part of it. The torque converter doesn't lock up 100%, so you'll never transfer what power you have as well as a clutch. And the stock tranny is going to shift at the best time to keep fuel economy up, since that's what your car was made for. Besides, the SOHC engines aren't all that powerful. It's (assuming) a stock 1.6 liter, what do you expect from it?

It was built to go to the grocery store and back. When I dynod my Z6 before I pulled it, she was making 91 hp. It was old, but still. SOHCs have VTEC on only one side (dont remember if its the I or E) so your losing out there too.

You have a small bore, long stroke 1.6L SOHC automatic. There are several things wrong with that list. That's not to say D's can't be fast, but with an Auto, it's impossible. Swap a manual and boost it...you'll believe in the SOHC again after that

Lol. Pretty much. ^_^. I used to have a mazda protege that was an auto.. It was slooow. Swapped the trans for a 5 speed from a donor car at a junkyard.. It was still slow as hell, but it felt better to be able to drop gears and what not.

It sucks to "try" to make pulls in auto cars.. especially an auto d16. Heh. Trans swap? ^_^

Yep, the problem is definitely that you have a slushbox. The D16Y8 isn't that bad, and it does have potential. However, your automatic transmission is what's keeping you even slower than normal.
If you read the write up on how Torque converters work in the FAQ, you'll understand why the automatic sucks for power.

Word.

Manual swap and boost it. Then no stock EG with a fart can should rape you on the highway. Upgrade your oil pump thought. Y7/Y8 oil pumps are crap. Ive seen more rod knocking y7/y8 than i ever wanted to.

Best d-series info you will ever get. I hate to say it but most hater-tec....honda-tech members are b/h/f/k fans...But you can still get alot of good info here. Most old school members know what the hell they are talking about.

Let the flaming begin.
