Trans not bolted to motor... and drove
Well I just came into 90 4 door civic with a auto tranny and the wife really needs a car. It didn't run when we got it and I found it was a fuel pump. It's a D15B with a block off plate in the head so it was the carb'ed motor and now it's set up for dual point. She started driving it around and it ran for about 2 week just on short trips. It ran really ruff over 3K-4K RPMs. I didn't get a chance to look at it. Then the other day the the trans started slipping really bad. We got it home and I noticed the tranny has no blots holding it to the block and there is about a 1/2 in gap between them and the trans isn't lined up its turned a bit. Now what do I do? What kinda of damage could have been done? Should I first just put some tranny bolts in it and see? I have a full EF hatch parts car but it's 5 speed and the wife doesn't want a manual. Here's a pic of the problem.
Well it almost sounds like the input shaft started to come out of the torque converter and that's what caused the slipping. That is if you are lucky, there are plenty of things that could of happened but that is a long list. I would check to make sure the converter is still bolted to the flexplate and put the trans back on the motor and bolt it up. I bet you would be suprised it might work.
i've taken a part lots of auto trans, and if its slipping you could have stripped the input shafts threads. your going to have to pull the motor and access the damage yourself, if you bolt it right back up, you might hide a larger problem that could cost you a tranny and torque converter
hope this helps.
hope this helps.
Well this morning I got out and pulled the tranny bolts outta my parts car and bolted the tranny down and what do you know it worked! I didn't have the time today to pull it all apart to look for damage but it drives great! It shifts a tiny bit rough but I'll look at it tomorrow when I have some more time. Thanks for the help. One question when the trans was separated from the motor it leaked some tranny fluid is there support to be tranny fluid there? Or is it a sign of a bad torque converter? Or a seal? I have never dealt with tannys especially auto trannys.

There is trans fluid in the converter and when it got seperated it could have leaked trans fluid. I would bet that it is shifting ruff because it is low on trans fluid.
I haver never worked on an auto trans but you might want to make it a point to check that the axles are sitting nice in the gear box aswell. Glad to hear it worked out tho!
