Default Boost on LS/VTEC 11.5:1 CR

I was wondering if it safe to throw 5-6 pounds on a LS/VTEC w/ b16 pistons. I believe it sits at 11.5/11.7:1 Compression ratio. The motor has ARP rod bolts, ARP head studs, and ACL rod and main bearings. I have only boosted b18/b20 in the past, never messed with LS/VTEC. I plan on picking up this motor just debating whether it would be safe or not to throw some boost on it.

With a proper conservative tune you should be fine. That would be a nice DD since you static CR is nice and high already. I'd go with a smaller turbo so there wouldn't be too much lag and have a nice power band to your redline.

with a gt28rs or gt2871r that would be the ideal daily driver in my opinion with a really good tune that is going to be the key the tune. Here's a stock s2000 with a little bit of boost dyno and mod list for example. And aren't they about that compression ratio?

mod list:
Engine: Bone stock F20c

Mods: Lovefab AP1 turbo kit (gt3071 .82a/r), 3" exhaust, RC 750cc injectors, walbro 255lph HP pump, 3bar map sensor, AEM tru boost controller, AEM EMS

Tuning on 7psi and 10psi on 93 octane:

so figure the same type of curve with less lag and of course less power with a gt28rs or gt2871r
the gt28rs maxes out at about 350whp and the 2871r 400whp both being pushed to there max.
go for it if you can get it tuned by a good reputable tuner
i could find a dyno of a lsvtec that is pretty close to what you have with one of the 2 turbo's i mentioned above if you would like me too
let me know

Alright thanks good info. I tune myself but I am still very new. So I will most likely take it to a reputable tuner/shop in the area.

you want me to see if i can find a setup similar to yours to give you something to go off of?

what turbo do you have in mind?
i would suggest the bullseye power borg warner s256 since it is very comparable to a gt30r but the BW is rebuildable and could easily make 300whp on low boost and give you some head room if you plan to build the motor with forged pistons and rods down the road

if you only are shooting for say a max of 300-350whp and don't plan to build the motor or go for more power i would go with a gt28rs with the ATP t3 hotside since it usually comes t25 flanged and t3 flanged stuff is more universal so if you wanted to upgrade you alread would have a manifold to do it with or if you ever wanted to sell it, it would be easier to sell a t3 over a t25 manifold
let me know ill try my best to help you with the optimal turbo for your goals

it should make an awesome daily driver
is it your daily driver?

and as far as the tuning you would just need to keep the afr's at about 11.0 and VERY conservative on the timing

a slight screwup on the timing and your going to make a mess of that motor, you have very little room for error with high CR boosted motors what octane fuel will you be running primarily, just asking since i just noticed your profile says your in CA if E85 is an option that would IDEAL for sure IMO, if not wouldn't it be 91 oct. or do you run something else?, like 100 oct some places sell that at the pump but id still take E85 over it i think its octane rating is 105 and only has one downside being worse miles per gallon

Right now i am rocking a Precision GT3251B (50 trim) on a b20 and I love it. I would probably use the same turbo. Yes it would be my daily driver. How conservative on the timing? Right now on my b20 i just through a basmemap tune w/ a wideband on 11.1 AFR's and .9 retard per pound of boost. Yes unfortunately I have to rock 91 oct out here in Cali, but I do have a brand new AEM Water Methanol kit to throw on to up the octane some. We have E85 here but its a drive. I do plan on building a motor just wanted to try this out for now. I am putting all of my money into my fully built colt right now...thanks for the help

that turbo would be nice on the lsvtec as well, as far as timing i don't know i'd just make sure to take it to atuner that knows because one or 2 screw ups could ruin it and the meth kit would definately help

i would get it tuned by someone that had experience with tuning a setup similar to yours and have a VERY good reputation, because the tune is going to be key in how this works out if you were on the east coast i could tell you plenty of tuners but i know of known on that coast. sorry
Do you have a tuner you think you could trust with it?

its a shame e85 isn't closer that would be ideal especially since its high compression to be honest with you

yeah E85 is slowing spreading out to different places. We just recently got within an hour away. Yeah I know of a few shops that have reputable people.
