I need help determining the proper motor oil weight for a stock 93 CX hatchback. Will I need to use high mileage oil if it has 108K miles or just stick with the Honda recommended weight? I don't have access to the manual since I bought it used. And not to start another synthetic/conventional debate, but is there any truth about synthetic not being good for older engines since it's too slippery? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

oh, and the synthetic thing- synthetic is good but its molecules or something isnt as dense as conventional, kind of as if its thinner. If you have a really high mileage motor and switch to synthetic it can find it way through stuff and create leaks or cause a little more oil burn

 

I usally run 10w-30 in the summer, and 5w-30 in the winter.

OP...5W-30. It says so in your manual.

Buy high mileage if it tickles your fancy. Buy synthetic if it tickles your fancy. 108k miles is very low mileage as far as those motors go.

I would recommend regular *** oil if you're just doing regular *** driving.

 

FYI I was recently informed by honda (my local dealership) that they now use 5W20 on all their civics from 2006 up and that they now suggest it to people who own older honda's. ... Bear in min that in the summer it can go up to 30+ Celsius and -30C in the winter.

Either way, if you stick with a synthetic 5W30 you will be fine.

Im now changing from 10w-30 to 5w-30.

Their is very little difference in 10-30 and 5-30. Just go with 5-30 cause thats what the manual says.

 

for anything stock i would always go with OEM recommendations. remember, its recommended for a reason. these people research and test everything out, not just pick and choose. =]
