Short Shifter Bad?
makes shift times shorter=synchros work harder
some people say it all depends on the driver, but for me i SAY they do wear down the tranny because it makes shifts harder and rougher.

I have had an AutoZone aluminum short shifter in my car since 2001. My transmission has over 270K original miles on it, with over 170K of those miles with the short shifter. Transmission still shift FLAWLESSLY at all times, except in cases of user error - usually when shifting into 4th and I don't completely disengage the clutch, or my hand moves the shifter before I get the clutch pedal down far enough.
Short shifters DO NOT kill transmissions. People do. Period.
Absolutely incorrect. This is a complete myth/lie/whatever.

its the driver that does the shifting that screws it up. so if you think your capable of it, get one, if not, stick with the stock one, they work fine eiither way.

You just have to get used to a shorter hand movement for same foot (clutch pedal) movement.
It's just like getting used to driving another car. Or getting used to driving the car you have.
People that are saying that short shifters kill transmissions because people don't know how to co-ordinate:
What happens if you buy a car with a short shifter allready installed and don't know about it? You drive the car for about 2 years until maybe the aluminum shifter breaks. Then you install another stock replacement thinking that's what you had the whole time. You could ruin a trans that way also.
It's user error. The shifter is not an integral part of the trans like a shift fork or something. It's completely user controlled and the user needs to calibrate themselves to it.

they do not damage ur tranny maybe with a teen driver .. i hear this from alot of young guys sayin man my tranny that damn short shifter missed up my tranny lol no buddy you messed up ur tranny by throwing the gears in hard and fast lol let the shifter do its job just go into each gear smooth and normal not like a freen trying to get down to the next stop light as fast as possible .. my opinon .. u dont like kiss my ***

In my ol' 95 civic, out of the 190k miles I put on it 185k miles of it was with a short shifter. I never ever had any issues. like patrick said: short shifters don't destroy trannys, people do

too much torque shut ur trap.. we all here talkin about short shifters , we not talkin about how i shorten my words.. get a life..

Actually..there's an apostrophe in "we're".
If the shorter shifts due to a short shifter caused severe issues with transmission longevity, then I guess the next thread should be able how lightweight flywheels ruin transmissions because they make you shift faster.
I'm with Patrick on this one...if there are any negative effects, they are negligible if you are driving correctly. Blame the driver error, not the technology that amplifies the driver's error. I drive with a short shifter, and do make mistakes every now and then, but I have the utmost faith in my transmission to be able to take a lot more then a few misshifts. People learn how to drive stick and they still last, so I think it will be fine.

Imagine you hold the shift lever at the bottom and shift into a different gear, you will have a shorter throw but nothing is actually different.(or cut the top of your shift lever off to achieve a shorter throw) Unless you start disengaging the clutch sooner it is simply driver error that messes up trannys not shift levers.
