I just bought a c's short shifter for my hatch,
ive heard you can potentially mess you your transmission.

Whats the general opinion on that? please help.

I had one, didn't like it so I changed back to stock . After I drove my pops truck, then the stock shifter felt like a short shifter

Makes it easier to miss a shift. Better to leave it stock, unless you have a need to race.

I had one.....broke to trannys

put the stock one back in...broke another tranny.

i would just say. you can mess up your tranny with a short shifter or without a short shifter. maybe its easier to do with the short shifter, maybe harder on the syncros or somethin...i don't know but it alol depends on hard you drive it too.

you should get the short shifter for the feel of the shorter shifting, but not to get a lower 1/4 mile. You don't have to shift at light speed to drive good.

cut down ur stock shifter. looks shorter, haha. i did.
it may feel like u have shorter throws too.

I have a B&M short shifter in my civic and I rarely (maybe once a month, if i'm that lucky) miss shifts or grind gears. Even then, it's cause I just slipped up with the clutch and was ripping through the gears too quick. It's all about your driving style. If you like to really rip on the gears, then leave the stock one in I guess, cause you're probably going to cause some damage if you grind the gears and slam it around all the time.

Personally, I like the feel of the short shifter. I also have the energy suspension stiffener bushings in mine, and the crisp feel of the shifter is great. I'm fairly certain it doesn't make me any faster, but it definately makes the drive much more fun.

I have a short shifter in my car and would never go back to stock. Every one has their own theories on wether they are bad or not necessary , but I think it's more of a personal opinion . It has never caused any problems with my tranny or synchros. If I were you I would drive a friends car with a SS on it and see what you think. That should make it easier to decide.

I have the Neuspeed one in my Civic and I like it. I do not grind/miss gears as much as I did with the stock one.

I have the Skunk2 w/ the shift **** and it is great. I made mistake's both the ss and stock shifter. The shifter doesn't make the mistake. The shifter isn't going to mess up your transmission either. Transmissions get messed up by improper shifting. You should try one out if possible and see the difference. I think it make regular driving more comfortable w/ shorter shifts and for racing, I think the shifts are a lot more precise. I would also recommend getting the bushing kit also.

Anything we do to our cars can pontentially break it. I mean come on, if we worried about all this and that, why would anyone want to mods there cars in the first place. Comes with the territory. I mean yes it is obvious a short shifter will help you shift fast thats no doubt. Heres a example. You shift gears three times during a quarter mile run, maybe four depending how fast you car is. You take a .10 of a sec of each shift in your run. If you ran a 15.6, you have no run a 15.3 or 15.2. Like some stated before, I think its people who brake cars not the short shifter it self. In my personal experience, i notice trannys go faster when people installed headers, cats, downpipes, with out a flex pipe or the spring loaded bolts. With all that power shifter, the stress has to go somewhere, mainly gears and differentials which leads to a broken tranny.

You might want to post this question in the ITR forum, as more people there have experience with this particular short shifter. I have had mine for more than 40K miles with no problems whatsoever.

sorry if this is a stupid question but...
Do the short shifters (major brands ie C's skunk2) lower the height? I want shorter throws, but don't want to have do do the "stunna lean" (where your right shoulder is signifigantly lower than your left) when i drive.

i've heard that the shorter the throw's are the shorter the life of the tranny is, but as for missing gears with a short shifter i don't see how that's possible.

Hmm...never heard that before...I cant imagine a car dropping almost half a second just becuase of a $100 short shifter.

I've heard that too. But I'm not grindin' gears. Besides, my ACT 6 Puck clutch eats my tranny. I love my short shifter.

Because of the shorter throws, the shiftgates are closer to each other. This makes the throw "less well defined", i.e. shorter. If you occassionally miss gears with the stock shifter, you will theoretically miss them more by the ratio of the short throw to the old throw.

I have a Solo shifter and ****, I like it. Needed some getting used to at first.. grinded a couple gears the first few days, but all is well now!

I believe they do lower the height to achieve the shorter shift, but only slightly so you don't have to drive stunna stylez.

A short shifter ruining a transmission is something that I find very hard to believe. The main reason is because if you look at the pivot ball down to where the shifter attaches to the shift rod, most of them are the same length as the stock shifter. You usually see a reduction in length in the area above the pivot ball, so the angle of the shifter rod going into the transmission doesn't change. The main reason for tranny failure (I'm guessing most people are ruining syncros way before they should go bad) is because they aren't rev matching properly when shifting. That has nothing to do with the shifter. And you don't have to shift at the speed of light to drive well, or fast, for that matter.

I disagree. A short shifter will make a bad driver worse, straining the synchros even faster than they were being strained to begin with. I agree that good drivers will do fine with a short shifter and not hurt the transmission, but how many honda drivers out there would you trust driving your car?
