Default Question about what rpm to shift at.

I have a 2000 honda civic 4 door dx, and have recently put in a rpm gauge as it doesnt come with one stock. Well this car is manual and I know how to shift for normal day to day driving, but what about when racing? I have heard that you want to get high rpms for better acceleration or whatever, so what is reccommened to shift at? Please any help would be appreciated.

Well first, How do I find out the type of engine? Its infront of my house and I can run out there and check, but not sure where to look. Also, my friend said to shift about 500 rpm before redline, but dam I tryed that, and it sounds like the car is screaming for help lol.

It's a D16Y7

SOHC, non-VTEC, 1.6L

I'm sure that's not exact, but that's probably right around where your powerband goes flat

7000rpm should be good for all out racing.. 3000rpm for normal shifting, spirited driving 4-5000 rpm

Why not race it out? Ive seen many 4-door civics all raced out...

But to the others, thanks for the help. yeah it didnt come stock with rpm guage, so I bought a nice tach and put in left side of car. It has options to set a rpm and the red light will flash, but other than that, thanks for help everyone.

Also is it really gonna affect me having a 4-door? Like is it pointless to race out my 4 door dx civic? Please no people just slamming on me, if not, can you give some info that makes 4 door dx a no go in racing?

Awesome thanks. Another thing I was wondering, in the next few weeks I will be putting in a new intake, the thing I was wondering is if I should get a cold air intake or a short ram intake. I hear many many opinions about what to get, ive heard people say you get more hp from the CAI and heard people say you get more from the SRI, so on this model of civic and specs, what do you think would be the best suited?

depends where you live
i live in FL and it rains here a lot, so I would never use a CAI because the filter would constantly be getting wet. and even though you have to get the whole filter submerged to hydrolock, your engine still bogs down when the filter is too wet.

I think SRI is better really though in any case, because it's less expensive, and the CAI's price difference over the SRI isn't worth the tiny bit of HP (probably less than 1HP) you gain over the SRI.
