Just because there is no check engine light, doesn't mean the computer has not store any codes.

Obviously when it stalls the battery light comes on. Haven't you ever noticed that when you turn the key on the cluster does a system check and all the lights come on briefly, then most of them turn off?

If the engine light was on and is now off and you never cleared the codes then there's going to be a stored code in the ECU. Since it is a 96 you've got an OBD-II computer. If you wanna do it the cheap way just to see what code is in it you can go to Auto Zone, Advance Auto, or the like and have them read the code.

Btw, you need to provide more information than that it stalls when coming to a stop. What's the temp gauge say? Where where you driving before coming to a stop? How fast where you driving? And mods done to the car? It's hard to diagnose when you're given so little information.
