Check engine light code
Is there a way to get the check engine code without going to a dealership/service center? The light came on last night and I will take the battery lead off to reset it today so I can know if it comes back on or not. The reason I do this is due to the fact that I have headers, intake and exhaust it has happened before. When I took it in they didn't get any valid codes but oh yeah about $35 for checking. Not much money but I don't want to throw it away either. They are the ones that mentioned my mods causing the light to come on. I've reset it myself before and it doesn't come back on. The one time it was valid was a problem with one of the spark plugs. It is a 96 Accord EX. Thanks.
'96 is OBD-2, so doesn't AutoZoned plug in their code reader for free? The can be pretty creative(!) about the descriptions, but at least they can read the code number.
Yeah, I ended up getting sick of my light going on too. So I just bought a ODB2 scanner on eBay. It was like $100 (Actron 9135 if I remember correctly), but it saves time and money in the long run. It seems like most of the time it is just the o2 sensor (that and I have a leak in my EVAP canister that I haven't been able to find yet).

Got a Helm repair manual? Lots of detail in there. It might be a valve or even wiring to cause that.
1457? Hmmmm, now where did I stick that file.....Here it is !!!

thanks for the file! (I have a '98 though) I have the original 98 Honda service manual that has all of the troubleshooting for the 1457. It appears similar to what your file says. I've done like 8 of the steps and after that I lost interest. My car was actually wrecked before I bought it, so I'm thinking maybe there is something wrong with the canister itself. I reset the codes once a week if I get a code (it seems to be intermittent- I can go two months without it coming back on). I'm not too worried about it, it's just a little annoying.
