Default just converted to obd1, how to check engine codes?

finally got the p28 wired into my 90 civic for my d16z6. didnt' come with a dist so I used a 93 dx dist. check engine light comes on imediately. i've done the search and realize the vtec dist is different. just curious what the diff is. will a vx dist work? I think i read that somewhere. if it will i think i know where one is tomorrow. otherwise I'll have to hunt one up on here. i also posted this in the hybrid but havent got a response yet. also, how do you check the engine codes? the light is on but can't haven't figured out how to read them. I shorted the connector but the light doesn't blink like it did with the pm6. thanks.

There should be a red or brown spare wire ..Just ground it and click over the ignition and it should work ...Might be differnt though for yours ? :\

I followed the instructions of storminmatt all I have to do is jump the connector for the distributor. A long flash is a ten and the short ones are a one. So, long, long, short, short, is a code 22.

Yeah, jump the yellow plug on the driver's side of the engine bay. It should have a little rubber cover.

well I double checked my wiring, the brown wire is connected to the link properly and the ground is hooked properly but when i short it out, teh light is on but doesn't blink. tried a 93 dx computer, does the same exact thing. I guess i need to go thru it wire by wire again. I used the instructions from this webpage:http://www.geocities.com/kurtsi_on/page7.html, anyone have different instructions I could compare to? there were a couple wires it showed that my computer didn't even have. but I looked on a different pinout and it showed nothing there for the computer. oh well. thansk for the help.

Does the car run? Have you driven it around? Does it rev past 3,500? If the light comes on right away, and the car doesn't rev past 3,500, its a bad ECU. If the car runs fine, and the light only comes on when you short the SCS, and doesn't blink, that means there are no codes stored in the ECU.

the car seems to run and drive just fine. revs to 6 or 7 at least. but there is no vtec activation, and the engine light comes on after the car runs for about 30 seconds or less and stays on solid. so I know theres an issue. i tried the 93 dx computer also and it does exactly the same thing, check light on. so I am pretty sure its not the computer. either something is wired wrong or a sensor is bad, but it was running just fine with the obdo setup.

Does the CEL do the normal 5 second light up on initial start while the fuel pump is primming?

yea the cel comes on with the fuel pump priming, goes off for a few seconds and then comes on solid wether the motor is running or not as long as the key is in the run position.

How did you wire the ECU? Did you use my instructions? If so, all you need to do is short the connector. If this is not working, make sure you have continuity between the proper ECU pin and the timing adjustment connector. If this is still not working, try another ECU. If the light does not come on, this would be a code 0, which means the ECU is bad (if there are no codes, the check engine light just comes on continuously).

took me all week to get enough time to sit down and check my wiring. sucks to have two jobs. my screwup. I had the orange and black and yellow and black wire from the o2 sensor crossed. straightened that out and I was able to read codes. just need a new o2 sensor now, pitching a 41. thanks everyone.
