ls/vtec q's... need to swap out pistons?
So I'm sort of planning on an ls/vtec and this dude I know told me it would be a good idea to use b18c pistons. Reason being is that he previously built two ls/vtec's and in both occasion's the b16 valves ended up hitting the top of the piston and ****ing up the valves, he told me the top of the b18a/b pistons are a different design then b18c pistons. Other than that he never had a problem though he didn't really have it for long. But I do have a friend who has an ls/vtec and hasn't had any problems whatsoever though he didn't build it so he doesn't know what's in it but breaks the rumors of ls/vtecs not being able to rev high, he constantly shifts around 9Krpm and has had the car for over a year. Anyway thanks.
ls/vtec's can rev high if built properly. one of the biggest problems of why an ls/vtec can't rev high is because people don't upgrade the rod bolts. the ls rod bolt is the exact same as a d series which is one of the biggest flaws on the ls motor. there are other contributing factors but i won't go into all of them now.
the ls pistons hitting the valves sounds more like a timing problem than a piston problem. i think you would have more of a chance of hitting the valves with the ITR pistons than the ls because of the larger dome on them. that's not saying there will be a problem becauase my brother had ITR pistons in his ls/v and had no problems at all. the timing just needs to be correct.
this is one of the better write ups i've seen on the ls/vtec. hope it helps.
