I just tried it out a few days ago.

I found out neat things like the "inlet/incoming air temp" (to the engine)
usually runs no warmer than 20 degrees F warmer than ambient temp.

(so a "cold air kit" shouldn't have much advantage unless it allows more airflow as well)

I also learned that I can get slightly better economy going just above 80 mph
than I can going just above 70 mph.
I was going slightly up hill, say 1-4% grade
at 84 mph and I was getting about 40 mph off the instant mileage gauge.
(it'd flip between 39-46 mpg every second or so)

84 mph at 40+ mpg is a beautiful thing.

I can also read information like ignition timing, throttle position, manifold pressure,
engine load, gallons per hour of fuel flow, coolant temperature in single digits,
engine rpm in single digits as well as more.

 

where can you drive 84 mph as a constant speed to get that mpg? most highways are 60-70 mph.

 

It's not too difficult.

 

no where in normal circumstances are you driving 84 mph daily and often enough to assume a mpg rating of 40+

I like mine a lot on my 00 civic - only complaint is that it could use a few more datalogging features - being able to download data to an excel spreadsheet would be great.

These are well worth the $150 for being able to monitor almost every sensor in the car in realtime, as well as pulling OBD2 codes, and the trip computer features. If you know what you're doing, you can even program it to show a somewhat accurate reading of crank horsepower... it's not super useful, but it's better than a butt dyno.

 

Sounds good, Hondatech always has its skeptics and ethugs so dont contribute to the madness. I just made a 1000 mile trip in my car and got relatively good MPG considering my sister and I were both averaging around 80mph on the highways.. I think I was right around 30 mpg. I didnt do the math or anything because gas is cheap as heck down south and I could care less when its only like 16 bucks to fill my tank..

Around me, the average speed in a 65mph zone is about 80 for travelling, 85-90 in passing lane. Out west, they have 75mph zones. 84 would be very normal.

 

so its normal to travel 80+ mph in a 65 mph zone?

most peoples "normal" daily driving habits dont hit speeds in excess of 80 mph.

This was not measuring mpg between fill-ups and a constant 84 mph for several hours.
It was "instant mileage", which is a rating that changes every second.

This was in the passing lane on a 65 mph (or was it 70 mph?) highway,
travelling in Maryland behind a Silverado pickup with a Maryland plate,
staying about 100 yards or 3-5 seconds behind him
for 5-10 minute periods as traffic allowed.
(the right lane was moving at 73-77 mph most of the time too)
Perhaps even at about 100 yards I might have had a slight drafting advantage,
but even still, it seems that I was up to 10% more efficient a little above 80 mph.

 

I was driving through from North Carolina to Toronto in one day.
Since it's winter there aren't many daylight hours.
I was still in Fredericksburg, VA at 12:30 pm
and was hoping to get to Pittsburgh before dark,
since in the hills/mountains,
it's harder to see wildlife like deer out on the road
before it's too late with all the twists and turns.

I wasn't weaving in and out of traffic aggressively,
only changing lanes and speeding up as traffic allowed,
signalling first, checking blind spots etc.

I suppose it depends on what you consider "daily" driving habits.

Going to the grocery store, getting a coffee, nah. However, many people around me commute 50+ miles to work on a daily basis, on a straight freeway shot from NH into Boston. I'm not going to argue with you, but I am telling you that 80mph+ is not uncommon. I'd even say it is quite common, especially in a 65mph zone.

 

OP: do you drive an fa1 or fg1? Just curious.

Your Scangauge probably isn't correctly calibrated for you car. After 5+ tanks, I'm still trying to calibrate the thing.

Fill up your tank, notice the gallons. Go to your Scangauge, press Home.

1) PRESS TRIP


2) Click on the bottom left button until you see TANK


And you will notice it reads WAY below how much you just put in your tank, thus your higher reading of the MPG.

 

I called these guys a couple months ago and asked about a scan guage with Head-up display. I wanted the gauge, but don't want to be looking down to see the readings. They mentioned they were looking into a head-up unit, so I will wait a while longer and see what they come up with.

Otherwise, these are a pretty good tool.

Same here in Dallas/Ft. Worth, speed limits on the highway are between 60-65 mph but most people travel 70-80 mph.

I have a 2008 Civic Sedan (not an Si) with a manual transmission,
if that answers your question.

 

My gauge for the tank is set at 13 gallons.
Actually 13.2 U.S. gallons since it's 50 litres in the manual.
*roughly 3.78.... litres in a U.S. gallon.

The numbers I've seen on my gauge for daily trips are quite similar to what I'm seeing at the pump.
It might not be calibrated perfectly yet, but for now it seems close.

Nothing, but it's showing the model of Scan Gauge I purchased.

The Scan Gauge's average economy estimate was very close to what I saw at the pump;
roughly 37 mpg with 98% of the miles as highway driving,
through all kinds of traffic.

Do you also think I'm lying if I tell you that I can get a "tank average" of 37 mpg doing almost pure long-distance highway driving?

 

Interstate 80 has an 80 mph speed limit a ways west of Salt Lake City. The Nevada state legislature is taking up changing I-80's speed limit to 80 mph, 30 miles east of Reno to the Nevada-Utah border. Great place to try this theory out. )
