Engine Rev with cold start and temp gauge fluctuation
Hey everybody,
I have a '93 Civic and was recently gone on a ten day trip where the car was left sitting. After that time the first cold start the car eventually began to rev while idling, but did not once placed in gear or in neutral. Also at the same time the temp gauge rose very high slowly only to drop back quickly to normal, this repeated though out the day. Also the defogging system only throws cold air. This is the first time the car has done any of this and it all happened at once so I feel it's connected, but am unsure of potential cause. If anyone has experienced this or has any ideas I would appreciate the help.

Check your coolant, and replace the thermostat. If the temp gauge rises high then drops back to normal or cooler when the engine is revved or gets hot enough, it means your thermostat is sticking.
First though make sure that your cooling system is full and properly bled or burped. If it's not idling correctly while cold, remove and clean/adjust the FITV. If it still idles abnormally when hot, remove and clean the IACV. Although if your cooling system has air in the lines, then that would also cause it to idle abnormally.

Thank you for the help, I will have to give that a go.
Just one more question, would any of that be causing the lack of heat when the air is on?
