Default Tranny shifter is messed up; can't pull into reverse!

Okay, so I have a 5 spd b16 jdm cable tranny under a b18b engine inside an 88 CRX si. The engine is finally cranking, but it's not turning over just yet.

But while I was working on the engine, I noticed that the shifter won't let me shift into reverse (it simply pops into fourth gear when I try). Additionally, I can't toggle the shifter to the left when I'm in neutral. Only to the right. And on top of that...when I shift into 5th gear, it feels like it's popping into 3rd (although I can't confirm this because the car isn't starting).

Transmissions are not my thing. I'm wondering if the cable might be pulled or something? One person told me the clutch may be incorrectly positioned. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks

i would highly doubt that your clutch position would have anything to do with your car not going into reverse or 5th. I don't really know much at all about CRX's but i would assume that there is a problem with the actual linkage/shifter itself.
-do you have someone that can move your shifter around while you are underneath the car checking to make sure it dose not hit anything or bind up or something of that nature?

What he said.. and if that doesn't work then you might try disconnecting the linkage and shifting right at the tranny.
