Default gsr head problems

hey guys i'm really frustrated because i just got my swap from a friend and the only problem it had was a broken camshaft holder, the one besides the vtec solenoid. He said it happened when he was jacking the car. I had the holder laying around from my past gsr... so i replaced it. Torqued everything withing specs according to the manual. But my teacher at UTI said that what i did was totally wrong. He said that the head is junk unless i balance the whole camshaft assembly because the wear patter of the holder is different since it directly touches the camshaft. so what do you guys think about this?

Yeah, thats the theory anyway. I have done it before on a DOHC ZC (used a cam cap off a B18A1 so we could get a D15B7 distributor to bolt up) but I think I only ran it that way for about a week until we found a ZC distributor. It'll work, for how long is the question.

You don't buy a new head or cam caps when your installing aftermarket cams do you???

Just check the oil clearance with plastigauge and make sure it's within spec, if it is it will be fine.

This isn't quite the same. The cap is from one engine, the rest of the head from another. They both form what should be a perfect circle, however if the cap wore differently than the head, or if they were machined slightly differently you will have problems.

I agree, that's why he needs to check the oil clearence. If that is in spec and the cam spins it will be absolutely fine.
