Default ECU swap questions

I have the 99 civic SI Engine and the 99 civic Si harness with the 99 SI ECU now the questions is will it just plug and play into the 96 EK9 or do I need anythings else like a converter harness.
A friend said that I need a Civic EX harness instead of the 99 SI Harness and a 96 Del Sol B16a ECU instead of my 99 SI ECU to go into my 96 Ek9 in order to get it to work. I'm confuse here.

any idea. any help will be appreciate. thanks guys

I'm trying to get this car BAR. So I'm making sure everthing is right.

Dude, as far as I know, you CAN NOT put an older engine into your car and get it Barred.

He is putting a 99 engine into a 96 chassis..

To OP: You can use your original harness. You just need to add wires for vtec and maybe the knock sensor? Then you just need an OBD2A - OBD2B conversion harness like one from boomslang here: http://www.boomslang.us/obd2to2.htm

don't quote me on it, but i don't really think thiers a difference between the ex and si harness, i don't know if your 96 is obd(i'm pretty sure it was swaped over in 96) but it should work with the harness and ecu you have. If you have the ECU for the engine and its the same obd as the car, why wouldn't it work?

It's not the same OBD. The '96-'98 is OBD2A and the '99-'00 is OBD2B. The wiring for the ECU is different. So he would have to either swap in the '99 harness, or simply use an OBD2A to OBD2B conversion harness; like B18CivicEJ8 said.

here is a picture of the b16 ecu inside a 99 ex. as you can see in the picture the 99 ex Ecu has an extra wire harness that my 96 ek9 doesn't have.

As stated, you need an OBD2A to OBD2B conversion harness, to swap the harnesses, or to get a '96-'97 Del Sol VTEC (B16A?) ECU. The physical plugs of both harnesses are the same, but the wiring is all different.

OBD2A: http://technet.ff-squad.com/wiring.obd2a.htm
OBD2B: http://technet.ff-squad.com/wiring.obd2b.htm

You cannot use a '99 - '00 harness in a '96 - '98 civic due to differences in how they connect to the underdash harness. You can however use a '96 - '98 EX harness and at most have to lengthen wires to reach certain sensors. Or reuse your original harness and do a little wiring. As for the ECU a '96 - '97 Del Sol Vtec P30 ECU will plug right in, or a JDM OBD2 P30. Theres just one problem, i'm pretty sure neither one will pass the visual check. (ECU is older than the engine) so you'll need an OBD2A to OBD2B conversion harness and a P2T from a '99 - '00 Si.
