I kinda had this problem with my 89 Honda Accord You really need to bleed the system, anytime you touch your coolant system (hoses or anything) you got to bleed the system because air gets traped into the lines The tempature has to be at a certain temp for your thermostat to open. And then your fan will kick on.Open up
that val and put a clear hose on one end and run the other end into your overflow tank. your gona see the air bleed out it takes a while, and just keep adding water
to your radatior if it gets low/ your be fine, Also change your thermostat and check the gasket make sure you get all the old gasket off before you put on a new one

Well the heater really doesn't give clues. How does it act when it drives.
My fan doesn't kick on until after 40 minutes. that's normal I think, unless you live somewhere desert hot.
If at all you think it's your radiator though, get a new one. once does start to act up, they're no good.
You can go buy a manual at auto zone or something, and t has steps on how to bleed it and troubleshoot your problem.

i know how to bleed and everything and its a brand new radiator so i dont think thats the problem.

heres what i do everyday i start the car let it warm up bc its kinda of cold here so then i take it out do a few pulls with it bc my old motor smoked so i think there is some still in the exaust and to see if its burning oil. then today i noticed that my temp gauge was a little higher then normal and my resivour was full and it was leaking from there

also when i drive it with heater on it doesnt go past half but with it off it goes past the half way point

well unless you have a leaky heater core or heater hoses, you can rule out your heater being any problem. why? any vehicle that is water cooled will run cooler, even if it's only by a few degree's, when the heater is on, because the heater is part of the cooling system. its kind of like adding annother small radiator and a small fan for it to the cooling system.

For some reason, my car overheats when I drive up hill for a while, but temp. goes back to normal after I turn on the heater. My cooling system needs to be flushed, but it runs great for every day regular driving.

I agree with burping (not bleeding) or flushing the cooling system and replacing your radiator cap and thermometer.

If it overheats while going uphill, then somethings probably restricting your flow. I had the same problem a week ago. I had to get a new radiator, but you said yours is new so I'd say drain it and refill
