Default New to Hondas, quick question.

Hey guys, Great site Ive been lurking for a while. Ive been in the SBC game for a while and recently got rid of my Camaro. I thought id come to the dark side! Anyways the neighbor kid got his hands on an 88 hatch in pretty rough condition (interior is toast and some minor body carnage) Car burns oil like there is no tomorrow and is willing to let it go for around 200 bucks. Ive been cruising the site looking over the FAQ for swaps and was wondering exactly how popular is the B16A swap? I am looking for a quick DD with potential of 170+HP to the ground reliably. I would really love something that makes power way up high (I wanna rev the **** outta it ). from what ive gathered from threads and such this is pretty much the baseline for all swaps in terms of cost/reliability and performance? thanks for any input guys. Great site!

I'd say that the b16a use to be the baseline for most swaps until people realized you can do more with larger displacement motors, such as the b20 2L . You could get close to 170 whp with cams, a good header, a good valve job (ITR), maybe a slight bump in compression and a tuning device such as Neptune or Hondata, etc.

The only thing is that the engine and drivetrain would be worth far more than the car from the sounds of it but you could probably reach your goal.

the b20 doesnt rev that high though. stock b16 revs a little bit more and makes some decent power. in a hatch that light you cn be pretty quick

It can, but it usually doesn't have to, just like a SBC which the OP is familiar with.

the b20 is a non vtec motor but it has bigger displacement and hand fulls of low end torque. i would b16 swap it b/c the b16 is a high revving high flowing motor that has lots of potential. and the b16 tranny is great for an all motor street setup gear wise. if it was me if u wanted to do cheap also a straight ls swap can be fast but again its non vtec like the b20 but has lots of low end torque. u can usally find ls swaps with trannys and ecu for around 500 bux. but if u happen to go b16 then later on u can swap out the block for either ls or b20 for cheap and have the low end torque mixed with the high flow high rev head... which is ls vtec or b20 vtec.

but the key is the displacement, and like he said the compression increase which makes the power. my pocket bike can rev to 10,000 rpms but it doesnt even make 5 hp.
