Default Timing belt install

I have a question about the alignment marks. How do you know that your dead on with the cam gears ? It hard to tell if your dead on due to the motor having a slight tilt backwards. Is there anyway to know that your dead on ?

Also I have the balance shafts removed however with cylinder 1 at TDC will the arrow on the balance shaft pulley be straight up ? And that should line up straight with the key correct ? Because I am looking on the oil pump for the mark that according to the helms should be there and I dont see one .

When installing a Tbelt, you want the 2 cam gears and the crank gear facing 12 oclock. I think the water pump is 3 oclock.

Now once you have it installed put the balancer gear andcrank pulley back on the crank, and rotate the engine 3 full times, then check to make sure that the TDC marks are still aligned.

If your not using the balancer belt there is no need to align it. The oil pump is aligned with the crank already.

Strange that the Helms calls the rear balncer shaft the oil pump, when its really the rear balncer shaft that you are aligning not the pump.

i wasnt aware that you even had to line the water pump up.

How do you know if there isnt a mark on the pump what is exactly 12 oclock on the crank ? Other than using something in the spark plug hole and finding TDC.

And the cams gears is just going by eye if the marks are dead on i assume.

Your water pump shouldn't have to be aligned. from the helms which you said you have...

single cam but it the same for dual cam.. just make sure the inner marks are aligned with each other.

Crank has an arrow pointing up for TDC

http://www.spoonhonda.com . Dl the service manual, it has all the info you need.

One thing they don't mention is that when the arrows on the cam gears are pointing up, make sure the two hash marks on the cam gears are pointing at each other. 3 o'clock on the exhaust, 9 o'clock on the intake.

Water pump doesn't have any alignment.

It's a royal pita to get an H22 belt on with the manual tensioner. I ended up selling the manual tensioner parts and did this. Much better imo and costs next to nothing.

also when you are at TDC, you remove the flywheel cover and you should be able to see a mark on the flywheel

If you're doing it with the motor in the car, you must use a stubby wrench to adjust the tension with that method.

but what are we aligning the mark on the flywheel and crank pully with to know that we are dead on ?

Yea your telling me about the manual tensioner. PITA

I ususally use a coat hanger and pull up on the tensioner to tension it. It sometimes is VERY tight. Im not sure if im possibly making it too tight. Would a belt tension gauge be ideal in this situation ?

Honda fixed the auto tensioner issue. I just did my first tbelt job and man it is a pain.

The only thing you need to align is the crank pulley to due north. There is a mark to the north. After that, align your cam gears. You want to align them north. This isn't a "true" north but north relative to the top of the engine. For example, the engine is on a 10 degree tilt (dont know the exact). So due north of the engine would be off 10 degrees. The easiest way imo is to line the lines up between both cams to point exactly at each other. If you tilt your head slightly left, you can see that the spoke is perpendicular to the engine and the arrow appears north in relation to the engine.

Another suggestion is to do a compression test after you get the belt on. Hook up the alternator, battery, and remove the coil. If you get good compression, everything is line up correctly.

Just wait till you do the balancer belt lol.
