Default Timing belt install problem - belt won't go on

Every thread and write up i;ve seen plainly states that u put the piston at TDC by the marking on the crank pully and the cam sprockets. Then put the belt on with the correct sequence.

I've redone my timing belt 3 times, and also had an auto professor and another honda guy try it for me, all failing.

Problem: if i have my engine axactly like instructed, the belt will NOT go on no matter what, with correct sequence and all. THe belt teeth and the sprocket grooves just wont line up at the end when putting it on the exhasut cam sprocket. I always have to off the timing at the crank markings by a little to get the belt on, causing the timing to be a little off after tensioning.

Any1 encounter this? Should i try to do 1 tooth off on one of the cam sprockets forward or backwards? 2000 acura integ, belt never reversed. Also just bought a new tensioner and spring

yeah it was just like 2 or 3 teeth to small. i have aftermarket cranks though but i guess they were the same size as stock because the belt from acura fit. I got my belt from Orileys. Thats the only reason i can think of that may be the reason your belt isnt going on. Your cam cranks arent aftermarket are they? if so you may have to check the manufacture site and see if it requires a different size belt.

Also if you have ran your car and the belt has broke while it was running or while driving it i suggest getting your valves checked some time soon. Mine broke on me when i was driving it and i was right in front of my house. had to get 3 new valves put in.

nuh all stock. So on normal hondas, the belt should slip on just right with everything timed up and sequenced correctly? one guy tried to tell me i should do 1 tooth off on the cam and when i tension it, it should line up correctly, but havent been able to get it to work.

But yea it did break on me, the teeth got skinned off. But leakdown was good and no knocking has ben heard. And that was a year ago, done multiply track events since and no problems besides a rough idle i get now with the belt not timed correctly.

what brand belt did you get from Auto Zone? I know they stock several different brands.

Duralast - 95184
Goodyear - 40184
Beck Arnley - 026-0269

Those are the Auto Zone part numbers for the B18B timing belt. A couple times I recall the new belt being a bit snug when fitting it over the cam gears, but never impossible to get on properly. Maybe you got a timing belt for a B16A or B18C. I am pretty sure they have less teeth than the non-vtec engines.

ok do it like this..
1. set your crank at TDC using the timing mark on the gear itself and like it up with the timing mark on the oil pump.
2. for b18B's there are 2 holes inside your camshafts that you will see through the cam caps at the timing gear side when they are lined up correctly. Put small bolts in the holes to keep your cams from moving.
3. loosen up your tensioner.
4. put the timing belt on the crank gear first, then the tensioner, water pump, and slide the belt over the cams, best at the same time but if not work the exhaust side first.
5. tighten the belt up following helms or haynes manual

no clue what brand, it was a year ago. Im going to buy a new one at acura tomorrow see how that goes.

Thanks for the advice hollum but thats basically the procedure i was following. THe correct sequence is to do the exhaust cam last but i've tried all different combos.

Ill try the new belt and update how it goes.

yeah your going to have to move the cams a little bit to get it to go on. if you did it right once you tighten it up everything will be set.
