I'm not positve on the exacts but,

if you unplug the ect sending unit and ground the plug (connector side of course) your temp gauge should shoot all the way up to hot. That may give you an idea if its the guage/wiring or sensor. Also when doing this get in veiw of the gauge so you only have to ground it for a second (longer could damage gauge).

make sure the plug to the sensor (its under the distributor i think) is plugged in.

Tensa_Zangetsu....

You ever get this fixed?
I got a similar problem except my sending unit is NOT connected and temp gauge reads 1/4 of the way up. When I hook up the single wire between temp gauge and sending unit the gauge climbs starts at half-way mark, and as the engine warms up it climbs 3/4 of the way then reaches HOT. Engine would only be at normal temp.
The thing I question is how can the gauge even read 1/4 when it is not hooked up to the sending unit?
When engine off, it falls back down. Start of engine it rises to 1/4 without being conneted to sending unit and sits there the whole time thru driving. never really moves. Please help

the temp gauge sensor is on the end of the head below the distributor - there are 2 sensors in that location - one is for the ECU and has a 2-wire connector - the other is for the gauge and has a 1-wire connector with yellow with green stripe wire
