Default Possibly blown tranny and axle problems.(Kind of long)

What are the symptoms of a blown tranny?

Yesterday while I was driving my car to the gas station, the gear popped out of 1st and I couldn't drive it anymore. I tried to level it but nothing.

I had just replaced my axle and was testing the car out(not racing). When I got it back to my garage, I took a look under and the axle didn't look tight and there was fluids dripping out from the tranny.

This morning I took the axle out again. I looked and saw that there was no ring at the end. I saw a ring on the old axle, but there wasn't one on my new axle.
I took the ring off the old one and put it on the new axle. I thought everything was going good.

I tried putting the axle back in but it wouldn't go in. I know it's the ring that is the problem, but I can't get it small enough to clear the hole.

Can anyone help me out? Could I just use rubber rings to replace it so it fits?
Also, is my tranny blown?

Sorry for writing so much, but I need to be detailed. Thanks in advance.

I bought it at NAPA, so it's probably a remanufactured axle. I'll probably return it if I can't get it fixed.

I don't have manual of any sort. If you could check it for me, I would appreciate it.

yes it shows to change out the 'set ring' in the helms... i think im having the same problem as you, i just bought a new axle and it will not go all the way in... the most i can get it is about 3/4" from the tranny, i think its that damn ring on there

I pushed and twisted and finally got the axle in. But now I'm kind of worried because I had to use the old set ring. Will the my car be ok and will the axle stay put?
