Use a knife with replaceable blades, or wrap it with tape.

You are hitting it with carb cleaner right?

Gasket scraper!

scuff pad for electric drill?
be careful with gasket removal cans, I got a can of this stuff that stained my concrete and was very strong! better were nitrile gloves.

I use a wire brush in the end of my drill to clean gasket surfaces. Cover anything you don't want gasket particles in, tho.

i used an angle air grinder with a fairly high grit pad so as not to gouge the mating surface. took all of ten minutes to remove every last bit of gasket material.

I really would be careful about taking material off the head. You want to take the gasket off, not the head surface.

But seriously, fresh razor blades and brake clean should be more than enough to get a head gasket off.

believe me i tried all sorts of razor blades, scrapers, solvents, carb cleaners, gasket removing agents, and nothing would take this crap off. it was a last resort to use the air grinder but it worked well and didnt screw up the mating surfaces. i only used it on the block itself since i wasn't reusing the head. i was swapping a y8 head on at the time.

heres a pic of how gnarly this thing was. this is after spending over 2 hours chiseling away at it.
