How leakage out the water pump weep holes is OK

Recently, I have had dripps coming from what looks like just to the side of the water pump. In reading the service manual I have, it states, a small amount of weeping out the hole is normal?? What would you consider small??
Any ideas on what is causing this?? It never did over heat, but then again, my temp gauge is not working all the time. What are signs why you need to replace the water pump, I have no idea when it was done last. Before I go and tear into it, I wanted to see if I was missing anything.

If you have to add fluid to the radiator or overflow more than once a month I would say its weeping too much
How old, in years and miles, is the water pump?
What brand of coolant have you been using, OEM or something else?
When did you last change the coolant?
The water pump bearing could be failing. Sometimes a tipoff to bearing failure is a very quiet, bird-like "cheep cheep" from the engine when idling.
Like the second person said, I would be monitoring how much coolant was leaking. If you are adding more than once a month, you have a leak.
Watch that temperature gage. Once the car overheats once, the head gasket is quite a bit closer to failure in the future.

I just wanted to mention that I had thought my water pump was leaking coolant out of the weep hole, but it ended up being a bad O-ring on the " connecting pipe" that runs from the water pump to the themostat.
I bought all the parts for the water pump too
so dont waste your money like I did untill you are sure of the cause/culprit.

I have no idea on how old the water pump is..I was told when I bought the car in April of '07 that a rebuilt motor was swapped in, but I have not documentation to support this.
I had replaced my thermostat last summer along with the temp sending sensor being my temp gauge always read hot...even just after it is started. I have concluded the gauge in the cluster has an issue or the wire to the cluster has issues. When I drained the coolant then, I put in something from the parts store..non OEM.
I know it has not overheated, but I don't want to push it either.
I will check the connecting pipe. I did do an oil change and just after that this happened, so maybe when I was getting the oil filter off, I did something else.

Well, the leak is coming out the weep hole...
Question...if my radiator cap is not working correctly, will that cause excessive pressure in the system causing fluid to push out the weep hole...or am I destine to replace the water pump??

Well if it the cap was bad it usually has less pressure not more but it is not impossible for it to go bad and give more pressure. Try a new cap, $10 or so and at least you will know you'll have a new one that works, its worth a shot

If your radiator cap is bad( and allowing your cooling system to run at a lower pressure), when you replace it with a new one and the pressure increases chances are your w/p leak will increase. Other items in the cooling system may also begin leaking.
If you have coolant leaking out of the weep hole you should just replace the pump. Eventually you will have to anyway.

Well with everything said...I decided to start taking it apart. I am down to getting the crank pully off...but even with a air/impact wrench the bolt doesn't seem to want to budge. I am guessing I need to just work at it a little more, but I just wanted to make sure it was not something odd...like a reversed threaded bolt?? I might need to get a bigger impact wrench also.....
No, its not reversed threaded. If the car is manual transmission, take off the starter and jam the flywheel with a crow bar, while you or a friend have a breaker bar and try to get the crank pully bolt loose. If all else fails theres always heating it up and impacting it off.

The connecting pipe connects the thermostat housing, runs along the back of the block (under the intake manifold, above the oil filter) and then into the back of the water pump. There are two O rings, one on either end.
So i noticed that i clearly have coolant leaking from the weep hole on the side of my wp. Being the handy man, i decided not to dilly daddle and threw on a tck and wp kit, courtesy of Gates, to no avail. Still leaking from the same hole. In trade, I've found not all parts are created equal. So i warrantied my pump. Still no change. Six months of scratching my head later, i run across your post. What connecting pipe do you refer to? Is it internal? External and just hiding from me? I've been so up close and personal with my engine i wouldve thought i'd see it. Even my pressure test said weep hole.
run it on the lift and look for the leak. If it's slow run a tracer dye then recheck in a couple days.
