Default boosted b20 with pro 1's .. need some help with cam degree kit

SUP .. i have a sleeved b20 with a stock gsr head. I got a pair of skunk2 pro 1's from a buddy of mine and id like to install it to see how it ll work with my sc61 setup. Problem is that i ve been reading here and it made it seem like skunk2 pro 1's NEED to be degreed in. So i shopped around and i m thinking of buying the Mike Belben cam fixture kit with degree wheel. I also started searching around trying to find a good writeup about how to degree in cams but unfortunately , either the writeup wasnt too descriptive or i m jus not getting it LOL .. and i also dont understand the numbers that the spec sheet gives. I AM WILLING TO LEARN so give me a chance lol . can somebody repost a good descriptive writeup about how to degree in Cams and how to read the specs .. ( hopefully with pictures ??! ) . ahaha thanks alot guys .

basically your cam card should tell you how many degree your crank should be at @ a given lift.. So let says (I'm just throwing numbers out there), your cam card says .50 in lift @ 220deg.. You would attach a dial indicator to the head in a way that it can correctly measure the movement of the valve, then you'd zero it out, then rotate the crank until you get your .50in lift or your 220deg whichever comes first. If your lucky you will get .50 in lift exactly at 220deg, but if not you have to adjust your cam gears to achieve the stated amount of lift at the stated amount of crank rotation... This is a very simplified description, but its the basic idea.

its kind of a bitch. lucky you have a kit, i had to make my own. i used two dial indicators, one to measure true TDC and the other to measure the lift of the valve. You can easily get the dial indicator on the valve, as when the valve is closed, it should be at zero. You will need a degree wheel, which will be attached at the crank. I used the 2nd dial indicator to get the motor directly on TDC, not necessarily where the crank pulley and marks indicate. Find a coat hanger or something, fix that to a fixed position, and aim that at zero on the degree wheel (when the motor is at true tdc). then, rotate the entire motor to the degree the cam card indicates. Loosen cam gear bolts (clearly, must be adjustable, not talking about taking the cam off the gear). Rotate the cam (should have a nice hex piece near cyl. 1 you can put a wrench on to move) until you have your .050" lift, lock it down there, good to go. check it on the other side of the stroke, which should be the other spec, then move on to the other cam and repeat.

you may be confused because there are two ways of doing it i think, this is the one i found to be easier.

oh, and if you are confused by the TDC BTDC stuff on the cam card, just take the valve cover off, rotate the motor to TDC (with crank pulley marks, so you can't be off 180). Look at how the cam lobes are facing. They will be pointed directly away from each other (on cyl 1) and not in contact with any valve. Now LOOK at the motor, how the cams are. You'll be able to tell how what valves are about to open as the motor turns counterclockwise, and should be able to deduce the cam card.

note: adjust valves before degreeing cams.

heres the link for the cam degree kit
http://www.xenocron.com/catalo....html

well thanks for all the responses .. i thought i had an idea about how to do it after reading the provided link. It sounded simple , just find exact TDC , turn the degree wheel to the spec on the card , loosen cam gear and rotate the cam until u see peak lift on the dial indicator . BUT after reading this from skunk2's specs
http://www.skunk2.com/engine-2.php?code=CSPB .. it only list the specs for the degree wheel but not the specs for the dial indicator !

then i did more searching here and found some degree instructions for Rocket m24x cams https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1796506

and now i m totally lost ! .. what did he mean by lock vtec ? .. is that necessary for all vtec cams ? .. skunk2 gave their lift at 1mm where Rocket gave it at 0.050" .. does this have to be read on the degree wheel differently ? And then it lists when it closes and when it opens , the centerline , and the max lift . So i m just lost ! .. i m not sure if this is meant for a different type of degree method but yea .. If you guys can clear this up for me or teach me how to use this specs that the cam mfg provides , it ll be MUCH appreciated ! LOL and if there are 2 degree methods and that link is one of them , how do u go about doing the 2nd method ?

thanks for telling me to read the entire posts. I only read the initial post for instructions and didnt take the time to read people's responses and questions .

this is the specs listed by skunk2's website for the pro1's intake side
Opening : 24 deg BTDC
Peak Lift : 98 deg BTDC
Closing : 50 deg ABDC

so with those specs , ( motors at TDC ) (All 3 rockers are locked ) ( valve lash is at 0 ) , i jus turn the crank to 98 degree BTDC , loosen the cam bolts and find highest lift with dial indicator and thats that ?

The specs given by Rocket for the rocket m24x are
VTEC INTAKE EVENTS AT 0.050":
262 Duration
102 LC
OPEN 28 BTDC; CLOSE 53 ABDC
Max Lift 0472"

it doesnt give the peak lift degree that skunk2 gave .. how do i use these specs for degreeing ? It gives the max lift and LC ? .. what are those 2 terms and y is that not on the skunk2 cam card ?

i think they are using .050" as the max lift which i believe is the standard thing these days.

email skunk2 for more tech info on their products

0.050" max lift? have you ever degreed cams before? i dont think you could be proud of a d or b series w/ only 0.050" lift in the cam.

the different specs you are seeing comes from the two different ways of doing it.

if you do not have a cam card, find one online. the manufacturer should be able to get you the specs.

use a dial indicator and micrometer. i will see if i can find something online that explains it to you.

damn americans and your decimals and my math skills anyways i mean that as .500" max lift and i know that number is usually smaller for most cams. .050 is the duration sry
