hi, i dont noe if i am right, i have a 98 ex also, and it is hard to recognize vtec due to that we have a sohc vtec, you can barely hear it engage. try to hit vtec more often, and maybe you can eventually hear it, it took me a long while, and i still can barely hear it engage, if you want your vtec loud, you can try a short ram intake, or swap the engine for a bseries (which i am going to do hopefully soon), they have dohc vtec, alot louder.

x2 and start changing your oil more often, or switch what kind your using. When is the last time you changed your oil filter?? what that doesnt catch will go to the screen by your vtec solenoid
