yea i have used this in the past, and i have used a couple other different items, i think i am just going to turn something down on the lathe that is self piloting... to help them go on straight and without any damage. i dont see going to a local machine shop and asking what tool they use being the best thing to do, as they are a machine shop and would probably like the business themselves. I have

Why are you making something with a pilot?
The valve stem is the pilot. If your going to make something that goes inside the guide chances are your going to damage the guide ID with a scratch or gouge.

I've been putting them on this way for over 10 yrs as a cylinder head shop owner and employee.

i dont think a pilot would scratch the id of the guide... but i understand what your saying. i just feel that there could be a better way to do it besides a 12 point socket....

Then most professional shops must be doing it all wrong then.Do it how you want,if you want to waste your time and make a tool that will do no better then something you already have then go ahead.

I didnt say everyone was doing it wrong.. at all i was just saying i dont think its the best... but thats me and i guess wasting my time to make something i think will work better is something i would still like to do. At school i used a rod bolt driver, that had the perfect id and it worked out pretty well, but i no longer have access to this. But i guess ill waste my time to make a tool that i would rather use.
