Default Why does vtec engage so high

I drove an AP2 the other day and it seemed like vtec engaged way too high. It felt like if it turned on at 5k the motor would have made more power overall. Any comments on this?

only vtec is a magical switch that tranform any gutless wonders into a fire breathing machine.

go read more what vtec engagement is based on

1. It kicks in around 5800-6300rpms. It's based on many different variables, it's not an on/off switch.
2. Vtec is there to be fuel efficient, not necessarily to give you massive amounts of horsepower.
3. Honda knows what it's doing when it's setting the vtec points where they have them at.
4. Honda builds cars for the mass public, not for the one or two people here and there that wants to get more horsepower at the expense of fuel efficiency.

Now go do some more research on vtec so you know exactly what it is.

The solenoid says differently.

Lowering it from 6k to 5k? If you get better gas milage because of that then your driving far to aggressively...

Anybody with helpful comments?

Air temperature, humidity, oil temp, altitude, air intake and so forth says differently as to when vtec actually engages.

Why do you want to drop the vtec in the first place? It's because of ones aggressive driving and need for more power (above that certain rpm range). Lowering the vtec to 5k will do absolutely nothing down low (which is where you are when you're driving sensibly around town). The only reason you would ever get into those higher rpm's (above vtec, regardless if it's at 5k or 6k or 8k for crying out loud) is because you're driving aggressively.

So after you drop the vtec to 5k, are you here to tell me that you would sit there, rev it up to 6k or 7k and then let off the gas instead of going all the way up to 9k? Or in the case of the AP2, 8k. I highly doubt it, once you're passed that 6k mark, you're more than likely taking it up all the way to redline, and in turn driving aggressively.

So honestly, know your roll and stop asking retarded questions such as these.

I was responding to "vtec is there to save gas". Since lowering it to 5k won't effect gas milage driving around town, I don't see how that would be a reason for them to set the engage point so high.

The whole reason why I started a thread was because it felt like the motor could benefit from being in vtec sooner. I thought somebody might have had the same idea, and had the point lowered. I'm sorry if I offended some of you with this question. Mods, please lock this thread.
