Default why do they turbos sound like this... ?

(sorry for the noob/OT question but i guessed you guys would know)

I was at the strip last night and saw a boosted SI. I didnt get to ask what kind of boost he was running, but i didnt see any kind of standalone or afc or anything.. he was running consistant 13.2-13.4's but everytime he'd rev the engine i'd pop, shutter, backfire.. etc.. does this car just need ALOT of tuning, or is this how turbo's really sound?

I've driven an FD and a WRX both professionally tuned and they run real smooth.. (no pops or backfires)

Are you sure he wasn't standing on a 2-step rev limiter?

It sounds like a two-step, or a badly tuned car.

This is from MSD website explaining their brand a 2 step (for use with their ignitions):
Example: When the Two or Three Step is connected to the built-in rev control on the MC Ignition, the driver is able to limit the rpm precisely while staged and waiting for the green light. By simply pressing a switch the Module Selector will automatically switch to the lower RPM module limiting the rpm at that chosen point. When the starting light turns green and the switch is released, the bike takes off and the Module Selector will switch back to the higher RPM limit. In this mode, the rev control feature of the MC Ignition will protect vital engine components against over-revving. This procedure will produce consistent and quicker reaction times. The Three Step will add a third rpm limit that can be actuated during the water burnout so that tire temperatures are kept consistent.
...and here is a quicktime movie from Hondata's website:

Here is another good example of a 2-step limiter. Check our this (badass) video of a Lancer Evo Tommi Makkinen Edition launching. Notice just before he launches he revs and hits the two-step....listen...and watch his tach....
