I have just installed a custom T3 turbo setup on a D16Z6, I have the vafc hack, colder plugs, retarded ignition 4 degrees, and I am running -40% to 35% at 7500 rpm........my question is, only in FIRST gear, I am getting sort of a popping sound from exhaust, such as when you hit the rev limiter, the car is always pulling, but I am afraid it could be detonation, as I ve heard.........Is it possible that I am running lean or what?? This happens around 6500 rpm, fuel trim is 36% at that point........only running 8 psi.....intercooled....

detonation doesn't sound like that. its more like sand/salt coming from your front wheel well. hard to describe. or like pinging from your engine bay under load.

I´ve heard detonation in the past while N/A, I know the exact sound, this is kinda like a backfire while I am accelerating, specially in first gear, and specially when boost is a bit higher.......sounds just like a backfire, bammm, but after reading some search posts, I was in doubt as some say detonation can be heard as popping through the exhaust........

Your probably runing a little to rich or you may have an exhaust leak.
detonation would come from the engine bay, not the exhaust.
