Default Clearance Issues?

Hey guys,

I'm thinking about adding some horsepower to my JDM B16. I don't plan on building the motor just adding some cams and trying to up the compression as much as I can to optimise the cams.

I am thinking of using a Mugen head gasket and supertech flat face valves to get about .8 more compression. That's pretty much all I want to do short of new pistons or milling the head.

As far as cams go I want to run Skunk2 Pro+1s and a supertech valvetrain.

The added bump in compression would be around 10.4 + .8 = 11.2. I believe that would be enough compression for the cams to make power. The motor has all the other bolt-ons (header, intake mani, injectors, and a tunable ecu) only thing I would really need for now is to bore the TB.

My main question is: Do you think there would be any clearance issues with the thinner head gasket, valves and cams w/stock pistons? Should I be able to run this set-up with a new tune and cam gear adjustments? Or do you think I should have the cams degreed?

Thanx.

V2V should be okay if you degree the cams in.
P2H shouldn't be an issue with the B16 combustion chamber
P2V should be okay.

But as anyone will tell you, "your mileage may vary"... clay to double check.

You already got some good advice.

Will it make you feel you better if I tell you it will be ok and then your piston smacks a valve? I promise I won't pay for it.

Don't take strangers word on what your motors clearances are.

You prolly shouldn't comment if you don't have anything useful to say.

Prolly should just stop being lazy and clay your F'n motor.. so you dont make a thread 2 weeks down the line about why you have a hole in a piston..

Seriously..

I'm sure someone has done this exact same set-up and could give me some insight into but I guess not. If it comes down to having to clay the motor I will.

The point I'm trying to make is this. Skunk2 says they have "set-up" tips for setting the cam and cam gears up if you cannot degree the cams. (my situation-motor is still in the car). Unfortunately they do not account for thinner head gaskets or milling. I'm sure the valves won't be a problem since the are the same size and just flat on the bottom. I'm just trying to get some info on the piston to valve clearance with a thinner head gasket. Since the piston sits either negative or positive in the cylinder, with a thinner gasket does the difference mean the piston would be - for example 1mm - closer to the valves if the gasket is 1mm thinner? Or is there another way to calculate that? Also with the cam gear settings Skunk2 gives for a OEM gasket and no milling (1.5 in 3 ex) how much would that change those settings?

I'm just lookign for some info from someone who has done this before. Like I said, if you don't have anything useful to say, go up your post count somewhere else. Thanx

1) Supertech valvetrain is good enough for pro2's, many people run it..
2) More then likely you'll be fine, compression isn't the end all be all of the what cans you can run..Stock pistons will be fine, i'd just resurface the head/block and run a 1 layer HG.. thats What i run, and no problems.
