How can you tell if it is a 2k si engine.
I got a deal on a 2 k si swap, but being the insanely paranoid individual I am I would like to know what to look for when I get there. I don't want to be bamboozled into buying an older engine. So:
What should the vin # start with, and was it different between 99 & 00?
Will there be anything on the transmission housing?
Should I just run a carfax on the vin plate on the engine?
What should the ecu say?
Thanks in advance. I might finally get to be one of the great finanacially irresponsibile!

Should be B16A2 and start with a 5 on the serial number. Could be confused with the96-97 del sol though, because I think its the same motor. Look on the head for a date. Should have a 99 in a small circle above the 3-4 exhaust port (distributor side) It will say 99 because the engine is usually one year older than the year of the car.

Correct. A friend of mine had a 1995 Del Sol DOHC VTEC with the B16A3, and I hadn't bothered to check if Honda had made changes in the two subsequent model years.
Thanks for the engine codes guys, but I was looking for specific visual clues so as to not be sold something other than what I agreed to buy. I need a helms now I suppose...

if you didn't see it in the other thread...
in the vin the 10th character will be a X for 99, and Y for 00,
in the serial # on the block 99 starts w/ a 43..., and 00 strats w/ a 53........
and the tranny both 99 and 00 say s4c and start w/ 10....

Also if you read it, people have told at least 3 different ways to tell.
Yes I did read the threads. What I did not want to happen is to buy the engine, have the correct block, an ls tranny, and a 92 vx ecu. Understand why I probed for more information now? But thanks for looking out for me. I know it is hard to remember to read other peoples responses to questions posed by you. This reading thing just gets so monotonous...
But seriously thanks for the info. Now I know what to look for on the block, transmission, and ecu. You guys have been very helpful.

Here is a link so you can look up the nearest branch of the NICB
http://www.nicb.org/about/locations.html
When you are looking at the motor you want to buy, call your local NICB office and give them the serial number of the engine and transmission. They will be able to tell you what the motor is out of, and as a side benefit, tell you if it is legit or stolen.
