Default lug nut stud replacement

Recently one of my lug nut studs was broken. I took my car to a shop and they said that they would have to pull the hub and axel out and apart, which would damage them, so I'd have to have them replaced for a cost of $450! My car is a 99 Civic EX and I find it hard to believe that this would be designed like this. So, my question is, is this the truth? When the axel and hug are pulled do they have to be replaced? BTW, this was the local dealership. Thanks.

Never get get your car worked on there! They saw money signs over your head when you walked in the door. Go to a smaller shop that you trust. You dont have to replace any of that stuff when you take it off(unless its damaged in the removal or worn out).

axle and hub do not have to be removed

remove the break rotor, and beat the lug out with a hammer, then trim the new one down and put it in.

Front or rear? I'll assume a front.

I had to do one on my EG. On 5G cars, there is a dimple at the 6 o'clock position on the hub that will allow you to drive the stud out. Just rotate it around until it lines up and smack it with hammer. You'll have to remove the caliper, disc and heat sheild first.

Install's a lot tougher since the stud is not broken, and therefore, it's longer. Be patient, work at it, you'll get it in. To seat it properly, stack a bunch of washers over the stud and tighten an old lug nut over them. Keep tightening until the head of the stud is flat against the back of the flange.

Not a difficult job, but a time consuming and thankless one. Just keep telling yourself, I'm saving $450, you'll feel better.

94CivicSi, nice write up, thanks!
I gotta do a rear one soon, so I was interested in the thread... good info!

I see on my rear disc setup that this would be a very simple job.
rear drums would be pretty simple also.
fronts, now I know, and knowing is half the battle
