Default Rays extended lug nuts question...

I have searched and didn't come up with the answer i am lookign for. I recently purchased a set of Rays extended wheel nuts assuming they also acts as wheel locks. When i got the lug nuts in the mail, i examined the lugs to find a special socket which was designed to fit into the slit of the "lock" nuts. Please look at the pic.

However, i am thinking to myself that you can slide any regular socket over the "lock" nut and undo it making this uselss. Am i missing something? It must work but how?

try comparing the inner spline of a normal socket to your lug nuts and special socket tool.

i know that i removed some volk lugs for a friend but i cant remember if they were extended. one lug was different from the 4 but you wouldn't know from the naked eye. and i had to hammer on a socket and then slowly remove the lock w/ a ratchet.

yup my lugs were extended when ralph removed them. you would actually have to hammer the socket on there(like alot of wheel locks) but no american or metric is a direct fit...as far as i would know. and i dont think the key fit on any of the other lugs. i believe the locks also have a serial number becuase they come in diffrent sizes

also use a 19mm to keep the OTHER lugs in better condition..a 3/4 or lug-star may mess the edges up a little...

Rays Engineering, the maker of Volk Racing Wheels, has released a new line of performance lug nuts. Made from Duraluminum, these Rays lug nut are extremely strong and light (the Rays lug nuts are 0.8 oz. each compared to 2.1 oz. for the stock pieces). In addition to the performance aspects, the Rays lug nuts also feature one 7-sided nut per wheel. These heptagonal nuts look stock from a distance, but can only be removed with the specially designed socket that comes with the set. There are several different key patterns of lug nuts to ensure the security of your precious wheels. The Rays lug nuts are available in anodized red, blue, or black. It's a great way to protect your wheels! Lug nut sets are sold in packs of 20 pieces only.

Agreed. But what i am saying is that the extended set doesn't not include any 7 sided lug nuts. But i will double check tonight.

Even if it did include the 7 sided nuts, they do NOT provide any protection for the wheels.

I lost the "key" for my Rays lugs (it was stolen, actually), and simply used a 12 point socket (slightly oversized) to remove them. It took all of 30 seconds more than using a standard socket on the normal lugs.

Any thief won't care if he damages the lugs. He'll just use a 19mm 12 point socket and a hammer, and you just be left with damaged lugs and no wheels...

Yup. And the lugs in that photo are clearly 7-sided.
