Default Acceleration problem above 6500 RPM

I have a 97 SH and whenever I floor my car the needle would climb to 6500 RPM at its normal pace, but once it goes past that up to redline it feels like the car struggles to accelerate and I see the needle suddenly climb very slowly. Does anyone know why this is happening or what can be done to fix this problem? Thanks in advace.
